In fact, the little engine that could is so good that it is one of Ward’s 10Best engines for 2012. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional. Both transmissions were rated at 40 mpg on the highway. If it sounds too good to be true, it is; professional drivers testify that the Rio5 regularly underachieves its advertised efficiency by 2-5 mpg even with a light foot. The Rio5 also suffers from an inconsistent ride, sometimes smooth and sometimes rough. Nevertheless, 35 mpg and 138 horsepower is nothing to be ashamed of, and show that the Kia Rio5 is not merely glitz and glamour.
