Just recently purchased a black limited V8 2009 Kia Borrego with 41K miles for 14,000 USD. So far I am loving the big on frame design and am wondering how reliability is? I am also not afraid to work on the vehicle and am wondering what big major upgrades there are to be made? This is my second vehicle right after my 2006 Jeep Liberty that was totaled in an accident if you have any good relevant information that you feel I should know about this vehicle please let me know.

You are correct that this is a big, heavy duty vehicle that I still love. It now has 140K+ miles and still drives as new. The only warranty repair I have had was replacement of the AC compressor at 60k miles that was making too much rattling noise but still worked. Some have spent time discussing upgrades to the suspension system but I would declare that there is nothing wrong with what KIA provided. At my mileage I have to nearly stop at speed bumps in the neighborhood the suspension is so tight. Replaced front pads at 95k, rear at 105k. Change oil at 10k miles with full synthetic which is down about a half quart. This is a heavy vehicle and it is not kind to tires. Originals were good for 28k miles, 75k mile warranty Michelin Latitudes 40k for which I got a significant warranty adjustment. Tread wear was dead even so it is not a suspension problem. Current top of the line Michelins with an 800 tread wear rating might get 50k.

Purchased a new Ford Explorer this year and the Borrego, which I kept, with its age and miles is just as tight and drive-able. The 330 hp 4.6L V8 is a much stronger engine than the 3.5L 295hp Ford based on transmission shift points. If KIA still made this truck I would have bought it rather than the Ford.

Lots of discussion on the transmission but don't worry about it. The ZF 6HP26 transmission is one of the best on the planet. Ford uses this transmission in its F150 pickups and much of its full sized vehicles. So does BMW, Jaguar, etc.

My 2009 V6 now has 150,000 miles, and it has been pretty bulletproof.

The only unexpected repair was the alternator replacement at 100,000.

Last summer, I completed a 9,000 mile cross country road trip over 3 weeks, and it handled it like a champ.

My only main complaint about the vehicle since day one has been the stiff ride.

Good luck with your new Borrego.
