Questions. 4WD. It has 13K miles on it.

I have always changed my oil in the GM Vehicals. This is my first import and I wanted to try to change the oil and filter. I read through the owners manual and they pretty much say take it to a KIA dealership. I did see its a canister type of filter and not a screw on type.

How do you replace the filter?
I live in Wisconsin so its cold up this way. I've always used 5w-30 oil. I see in the manual it says 5w-20.
Does it matter?

It also says Change axle oil at 22k. Is this correct? Is this something I can do myself or should I take it somewhere to get it done?

Transmission Fluid? Doesn't say how often in the manual but the Dealer recommends it at 30k.

Transfer case Fluid? How often on this?

Does this have a Timing Belt that has to be replaced at 100k?

import vs domestic really doesn't make any difference. I've owned lots of both. Generally imports are EASIER to work on, at least in my experience. Domestics do some really dumb things when it comes to common stuff to work on, the engineers who design it never actually do the work. (union laws prevent them from actually turning a wrench and seeing how their design works!)

Anyway, nevermind that above! The oil filter is simple to change, easier than any other vehicle you have owned. There is just a container up on top the engine that holds the filter. Screw the top off, remove the old cartridge, and drop in the new one. They are a little expensive though ($11 IIRC), and only available at a dealership.

As far as oil, 5w-30 is fine. Almost every single vehicle that specs 5w-20 doesn't actually NEED 20, it was done to increase the mileage at the possible expense of engine longevity. As long as it makes it past the warranty interval, the mfg is good to go. Mileage goals are tough to hit though, and every bit helps.

The engine has a timing chain, so you don't need to change it. As for the oil, I personally recommend 5W20. I have the same engine in my Sedona, and it has 162,--- miles on it without any major problems. Have fun with the Borrego, it's a great vehicle!

So with the Oil Filter. I unscrew the plastic top and pull the old filter out. I see there is seals with the filter kit. Where do those go?

Is there grease jerks that have to be greased. U joints?

There are two gaskets. One goes around the top by the threads, the other one goes around the bottom. Make sure (obviously) that you remove the old gaskets first. They are tricky to get off - I use a pocket knife to cut them off. Make sure the new gaskets are seated in the grooves. I am not sure if you have to or not, but I have always put some of the new oil on the new gaskets, just like you would on the gasket of a spin-on type.

There is also a drain plug gasket included with the oil filter..at least there is with the Kia filter. As far as I know, there is no greaseabul fittings.

Saturday I took a look and I couldn't find where the Oil filter housing is locacted at. Is it hidden?

On v6 versions, the filter housing is located on the upper left part of the engine but you need to take the engine cover off first to do that. Once its off, you'll see a black housing with a knob on top. To unscrew it, I used a crescent wrench and that's it. To finish the process, just do what the other members have mentioned above.

I have the V6. Does the engine cover pop off or is it bolted down. I didn't see anything holding it down.

eh...

If you have ever seen chess pieces, the pegs that hold the top cover on look like the pawns. The heads of the pawns fit down into little rubber holes that simple grip them and the whole cover assembly pops off. Just carefully find the pop-points and pull it up.

Me being a short feller, I have to crawl up on a step to reach back to the filter housing without scraping the paint.

It is easy to change....after you get the gaskets off...the one on the end of the shaft is a booger. I use an old hooked scribe that I have no idea where I got...or when.

Thanks! I think I can do this...LOL I took a quick peak under the engine and I didn't see the oil drain plug. Wheres it at on the engine?

It if has the underbody skid plates on it, you have to remove that first to get to the drain plug. That is why I let the dealer do my oil changes. Though it is stupid that Kia neglected to put a opening in the skid plate to allow for oil changes without having to remove the skid plate.

Rick2456 maybe they advised to use the Suction machine and suck the oil from the level stick .
I remember we have optima v6 , when we use the suction machine it bring out half liter more oil vs draining the oil down from drain plug :confused: .

even so you are right Rick2456 a small opening in the skid plate will not hurt :rolleyes: .

I must not have the skid plates. I did see the drain plug and found where I put the new filter on top of the engine.
