Multi-Function headlight switch replacement now mandatory

I know Kia extended the warranty on the multi-function switch to 150,000/15 years but got a "voluntary service campaign" letter yesterday to now proactively replace the switch if your vehicle is covered. So I called my dealer yesterday and shocker, they don't have the replacement part. They did say this is not a "inspect and replace" campaign but rather "mandatory replacement" if you got the letter. They anticipate replacement parts within two weeks and put me on the list to call when they are in and apparently I was the only one on the list so far. Covers 2016-2018 model years but not sure if all trim levels or only some.

Fire that mechanic, in any repair or work the repair must be tested and verify its working. Clearly this wasn't done.

All the same settings are on the stalk, I suspect the tech just connected the wrong wires so the various modes/settings have ‘shifted’?

I’d expect something like this has a plug where your can just plug and unplug? Maybe they did use a wrong stalk that is for a different model?

Anyway, my local Kia dealership is screwing up more… my last oil change they messed up my door when they lowered my car with the door open… this time they don’t check their work…

At least they’re still very nice at remedy their mistakes. I guess I just have to pay more attention and help check their work from now on… :p

They don't change the stalk. They only change the little cap at the end as that's where the switch is. I'm not familiar with it but it's always possible that it can be put on clocked wrong and cause issues with the contacts being in the wrong spot.

If you check that link I posted earlier it shows the replacement directions with pictures.

Most likely they weren't ready for a full recall on the switch as they were coming up with a repair kit that replaces just the end cap switch which is a much cheaper part and allot less labor time than the entire stalk. And now that they have a cheaper to do repair part they have made it a mandatory repair. (that's my logical deduction)
I wouldn't mind if they had replaced the stalk as it's not as crisp as a new one. Only 70K on it but Im one of the few that actually use turn signals so the switch wears out.

Not entirely sure what they did, the stalk itself felt rougher to the touch, just felt different… so I’m assuming they replaced it, but for sure they likely ‘clocked’ the plug in the wrong way?

Anyway, at least they quickly fixed it and didn’t make me wait long. Also washed my car again so it’s squeaky clean! ;)

I've not had a recall alert on this. No problem with my switch anyway. Sounds like its best to leave it alone anyway.

I have never used the AUTO position since buying my 2017 new. However, I have now pretty much confirmed that leaving the switch in the PARKING & TAIL LIGHT postion will guarantee an overnight battery drain within a couple of days. Even though I ensure that the lights are off after turning off the vehicle and the delay timer has expired. Now I always use the OFF position and have not had an issue for several weeks.

Yeah, this must be some sort of computer issue rather than stalk issue. I avoid using auto mode now and on mode has never accidentally turned on my lights on yet!

I’ve had the stalk warranty replacement but not really wanting to try auto mode yet. I suppose safest bet is to just leave it at off position.

I finally went in for my appointment last Thursday to have the switch replaced. After waiting 1.5 hours, the service advisor tells me they could not complete the fix because the replacement switch broke upon installation. And they don’t have another one in stock. Factory defect they claim. So at least I have my old switch back on. I’m inclined to just live with what I have, and make sure it is in the OFF position when I’m done driving.

That's my take on it. They contacted me to get mine replaced, but I just leave it on for now and it works fine. I might be gambling, but I have yet to have the lights turn on by themselves when the car is off. I don't have a problem with driving during the day with my headlights on.

Yeah, they totally screwed mine up at 1st too. Only realized at home that whatever mode you switch to on the stalk was different than what the dashboard is telling me… had to go back to have it fixed.

I do agree it’s probably not worth wasting your time for… unless you’re servicing the car there anyways, then maybe it’s worth just to get it done?

Leaving it ON has never gave me any problems. It’s just the AUTO mode that’s problematic.
