Hi everyone. I have a 2009 LX 3.8 w/4x4. I put a Dodge Charger K&N filter and felt a bump in power but it wasn't enough for me sooooo, I did something cool and free. If you notice the Borrego has a really big air induction tubefrom the airbox (which is a good thing) that sucks air next to the left headlight. If you look closely the induction tube is sealed off from the grill (no direct airflow). I actually took apart the piece of plastic that covers the raiator and found this weird plastic contraption. It is a plastic grid that probably helps with induction noise and particles. I was able to tear it out after about an hour of pulling and stretching the bumper(scary but I did get it out), I don't know what happened but it now has better pickup and better hi-end power. Trust me I would have to downshift going up hills on I-10 in Arizona and after the mod it had more cold airflow since it gets air directly from the grill. My mercedes had the same "ram air induction" system. This is where I got the idea from. It was difficult but do-able.
The second mod I did was a secondary cat gut. I bolted off the 2 secondary cats and gutted them. No difference in noise unfortunately but I have more pickup all over the RPM range. When the transmission shift to 5th doing 35 MPH I would always make the transmission downshift because it had no torque( engine RPM was at 1200...super low for a heavy SUV with a V6!) but now it holds the gear longer and no longer drones. When I floor it it makes a little more sound and at idle you can actually hear a slight rumble. I was originally going to buy 2 Hyundai 3.8 genesis coupe secondary cats(because the fit)... but i went the cheap way.... oh well. I will take pic of the air induction mod and a sound clip of the exhaust. I am currently in Korea(ARMY) and there are tons of mods for the "Mohave's". Has anyone else done anything similar?
