If you have a tablet or cell phone, buy an OBDII dongle (BT/WiFi, $5-15).. apple only comms with WiFi.. Android would be better.

Thanks, Philip. The car could not start after the overnight temperature dropped down to -8C. Checked the battery, voltage is 10.8. i will replace the battery first and then follow your instruction for testing with OBDII dongle.

 

There's a good chance you'll be throwing money down the toilet if you buy a new battery. The mechanic should have evaluated the battery and determined that it was ok, before he installed the alt. Call and ask him what he found when the battery was tested in his shop. Your vehicle could have a parasitic drain, a short, or perhaps a mistake was made with the install of the alt.

Also, can you post exactly what the symptoms were before the alt was replaced. Battery light on and/or something else?

 

Replaced the battery, and the car was running fine and the malfunction indicator light was off. the mechanic apparently just replaced starter not checking the battery.
