I recently switched over from a Honda 2017 coupe EX-L to a 2024 sportage EX . My car has a keyless fob. I went to target to run some errands with my 8 month old . I have my own little routine when it comes to putting my groceries in then throwing my diaper bag in the front o passenger seat , then I take my daughter off and lock her into her car seat base in the back side of the passenger side .
Well I had the trunk open , put my groceries away , open the front passenger door threw my diaper bag in closed it . Then opened the back passenger door and loaded my daughter in . Closed her door , then I realized I still had my phone in my stroller so I went to open the front passenger side again to throw it in and the door was locked . Tried to open my daughter’s door LOCKED. My key fob is always in my diaper bag . So the car locked within seconds with the car being off while the fob was inside and my trunk was still open thank God . I was pressing the button on the outside door but no luck. The only way i was able to unlock it was through their limited time offered kia connect app. If not I would had to climb through the dang trunk ! My daughter was in the vehicle while it was locked . Has this happened to anyone else ? I took my car to the dealer and it was doing it there but they turned off my “auto lock” feature . This car doesn’t have an auto lock feature for the key fob inside . The only two options on my menu for auto lock are 1) once it’s shifted out of park && 2) once it reaches over 9 m.p.h.

Summer is coming && I’m terrified this will happen again ! What else can I do ? Also I recorded the incident .

I tested mine this morning. Locked my fob in the car in the garage. Went in the house and unlocked it with the app, but by the time I got to the car it relocked, and the app continued to show it as unlocked. I possibly could have waited for the app to update and recognize that it was locked again, but I just unlocked it with the spare/duplicate fob.

It surprised me that it would even lock with the fob in it. My 2020 wouldn't lock if the fob was in it. I will check tomorrow to see if there is a setup in the system to prevent locking the fob in the car.

Anyways no idea if you have to turn something on. But today, I got a cage built over my catalytic converter, since the car is AWD it has 8.3 inches of ground clearance. But I had the guy back my car off the jack to take it home, and he put the keys into the center console. I didn't notice this and got out of the car, and then closed the door, and attempted to lock the door. It made a long extended beep and the door was not locked. I grabbed for my keys and noticed they weren't in my pants and opened the car door to find them in the center console. So there is some protection against locking your key in the car.
