I drive a Kia Spectra5 that a family friend got for me at an auction. The driver side door and rear door were caved in from an accident. The engine currently has 122,000 miles on it. The timing belt was done at 91,000 miles before I owned it. We had to put in a used transmission with 84,000 miles on it. Already replaced the fan motor and filter plus the alternator. Below are some questions for Spectra 5 owners.

Can I improve engine quality with after market add ons even though it is a stock engine?

Does a dual exhaust improve the quality of the engine?

By now you have figured out I know nothing about cars. I just want to make this thing last up to 250,000 miles.

There is more stuff that needs to be fixed. Driver chair is crooked and the passenger chair is loose and wobbles around while driving. interior smells moldy and it's the Summer time.

Fun times.

Yes these forums are active...Sometimes you may have to wait for a response as we do have other things going on with our lives :)

Some answers...

Not really... This car's engine and transmission were designed for good reliable transportation and the aftermarket parts suppliers were not going to invest in a basic car with limited sales numbers unlike the Honda Civic or Accord...

Does a dual exhaust improve the quality of the engine? Why install a "dual exhaust" on a 4 cylinder engine? Even headers and larger pipes won't help enough compared to the dollars spent...

You will probably need to replace the flex pipe (exhaust noise), Change the oil and oil filter regularly...use full synthetic oil and KIA oil filters... Replace the cabin air filter located behind the glove box (improve smell)... You will probably need brake pads and rotors (discs) as they tend to rust and grind...but... Rockauto.com has both unbelievably cheap... Watch a few youtube videos and do it yourself...

A local "pull-a-part" is a great way to "update" your car for cheap... New (to you) seats... broken parts in need of replacing...etc...

I'm in and out of these forums just about every day and know the Spectras well if you need me...

They are really good cars that were badly underrated and used parts are plenty... Get rid of the "bugs" all used cars have and you WILL have a great car...
