Hi all,

I just bought a 2016 Sorento SX with 30K miles. This is my first Kia, coming from owning Toyotas, lots of Subarus. Very impressed with Kia so far. Enjoyed browsing through this forum and learning a lot about the car and the owners community.

I noticed that my car has a spare tire stored underneath the car. I live in NYC and if I know anything about city life this tire will not be attached to my car for long if it stays in it's current position. Wondering if any of you have experience securing spare tires stored on the outside of your cars? I saw a few spare tire locks on amazon, but they seem to be more suited to vertical spares mounted on the back of a car. Of course I can just buy a security cable an attach the spare tire to the undercarriage, but I'm hoping that there are more elegant solutions.

Additionally, if anyone has in mind a set of essential accessories you got for your Sorento, feel free to share. I'm thinking about getting a hitch and roof crossbars, any preferred manufacturers?

Looking forward to learning more about these cars over the many years of safe and enjoyable driving.

The spare is affixed using a clamp attached to a cable which is raised and lowered from inside the vehicle. I don't believe it would be easily stolen. Then again I've never been to NYC.

I once bought and used a third party lock (required bolting a new post to the frame which went through one of the wheel bolt holes) for my 4 Runner. Easy to slide under the 4runner with a battery powered sawzall or angle grinder and off you go with the wheel and tire.

My recently installed trailer hitch on the Sorento requires deflating the spare to lower it.

Anyway, I think there is little risk, who want's a donut spare ? The 4runner however was a 'limited' fancy wheel like the 4 on the ground and new tire, lots of risk there.

This is not an issue. In order to steal the spare, you have to first get into the tailgate area.
You can not do this without the key fob. It has a proximity sensor. There is no lock to punch,
You could break into the car and put the rear seat down to get into the area, but you still can not open the tailgate, making it near impossible to crank down the spare tire.
I lowered it one time to check it out. The cable is not exposed, there would be no easy way to cut it. Maybe you could crawl under and use an angle grinder to remove the mount plate. Not really worth the effort.
I carry a full sized spare. I though about putting that under the car. It would work, put quite a bit sticks out so I decided just to carry it in the back. So I have two spares.
The full size could be stolen by breaking into the car and dragging it out the back doors.
I seriously doubt you need to worry about this.

Hmm, I too have a hitch on my '16. I lower and raise the spare twice a year to check tire pressure when I swap on/off winter tires. I've never had an issue with having to deflate to access it. It takes some manual manipulation to get it above the hitch on one side.

Huh, a deflated spare, how does that work? ;). Just curious, is your hitch dealer installed or an aftermarket?
I have a 19 EX w/a dealer installed hitch and other than some manual manipulation as noted by recon9, the spare, while most certainly a PIA, is not that difficult to get up or down. So unless your hitch/installation or your spare is vastly different from standard, I can't imagine why you'd have to deflate it.

But, have to agree with most, why would anyone want to go to the trouble to steal that thing?
