Hi all i have looking at this and other sites re the Sorento, and 4 weeks ago i took the plunge and treated my self to a 2005 Sorento 2.5 XS.
Very happy!!!!.

1 area i am concern about is the immobiliser, Thatchem don't list it , and insurance people are giving me hassle.

so i inquired about a car alarm (auto watch) which is a cat 2-1 to bring it up to spec. but if the immobiliser is not listed it won't give me cat 1status.
not sure if the alarm people are trying to rip me off.Dealer is not regestered to fit alarms.

can any body advise? what the best senerio would be or recommend a alarm system to put on the vehicle.( apart from a rottwiler on the back seat)

the kids around here will nick anything.

thanks for the info Paul.
looks like a good bit of kit.
do know if they will have to change the orginal immobiliser as well.

someone at my work said the immobiliser has to comply with Type approval regs whenl Kia import the vehicles.
Contacted my Dealer totaly useless!!
i am even more confused.

kia fitted mine (cat2 appr) f,o,c as at the time they sold it to me they were under the understanding that the fact fitted imm was cat2 standard it wasnt until i couldnt get insurerance that i brought it to there attention. they got an specialist firm to fit a cobra imm which came with acertificate to send to the insurance company (direct line) which they have now approved. it is fitted beside the ignition and i have an additional key which i have to touch it with to de activate the imm.

All Kia's have a transponder imobiliser as standard, the keys have to be programmed to the vehicle or you will be unable to start the car.

Find it all a bit strange about this recent insurance problem, perhaps theres been a spate of Sorento thefts?
I know they are easy enough to get into

No worries...

If you go to http://www.thatcham.org/resources/pdfs/compliance.pdf you will be able to see the latest pdf with all Thatcham approved manufactures and models listed.

The RAC Trackstar Plus interfaces into the existing alarm. If your alarm triggers... so does Trackstar. If your car is flat lifted or towed it will instantly send continuous GPS coordinates to RAC which is relayed to the police.

All police area-cars are equipped with tracker signal finders... The average recovery time for a stolen vehicle that has tracker is under an hour. When your spending 20K + this is (in my humble opinion) an absolute must.

In short it brings the non Thatcham approved KIA alarm in line with you insurance requirements.

Failing that you could take it to your local car alarm dealer and have a Thatcham 2 immobiliser fitted for under a one-er.

Cheers
Paul

Murphwiz... BTW

I had a 98 Ford Escort Ghia X before I had the Explorer which was stolen from my house.. It too had a "transponder immobiliser" but unfortunately they still got passed it... (I loved that car, full leather, air-con etc etc)... an engineer from Ford said "I aint got a f****** clue how they drove it off, it’s got a transponder immobiliser fitted".

I have learned the hard way!

If you can’t track it, it isn't worth a toss....

This will make you laugh... :haha: A few years ago a friend of mine spent a good few k bigging up his 205 GTI. Nearly 4k...
He spent “hundreds” on a state-of-the-art alarm.... The little shits stole his alarm out of the car!

Read a few posts now concerning insurance companies and alarms and I have to say it's all a big surprise to me. My insurance company never even mentioned alarms/immobilisers when I insured it. I have a 2005 XS Auto done through Direct Line. With about seven declared mods. Costs me £367 with 2 named drivers. Maybe it's the XSE that has caused them to twitch for some reason.....smarter wheels !!

Hi Guys
thanks all for the info. I havespoken to Thatcham and the hassle is because the vehicle is made out of the E.U. But when i asked about the Type Approval Directive of 1998 (all vehicles coming into this country have to have this) and item 9 on this directive is about car security he drew a blank!!!
buracrat!.

i have had words with a local alarm specialist and he will fit me a full cat 1 alarm for the price of a 2>1 upgrade.

cricky what a load of hassle to make sure the vehicle is covered for theft.

but then i suppose i dont really want to lose such a great vehicle.

thanks

Hi all

I had the same grief with my new XT, Kia 'help' centre were apologetic but no help whatsoever, Kia dealer exclaimed 'what a load of *ollocks!'

I went with Diamond Insurance in the end - no such Thatcham silliness over there. Gonna add RAC trackstar just to be safe
