IAC failures and overheating?

Surging idle issue, and trouble shooting questions.

We have a 2005 sedona, and it had an erratic, surging idle. Every so often, the idle would climb to around 3000 rpm, then settle down. This would eventually produce a check engine light, and the code would be P0507 "Idle air control system RPM higher than expected". Cleaning the idle air control valve would fix the issue for about a week, then the problem would return.
This time, I pulled off the throttle body, and cleaned up both sides of the butterfly valve. Lots of dirt was on the back side.
Now the car is idling at 12 to 1500 rpm.
Just for the heck of it, I pulled the connection to the Throttle position sensor, and idle did not change, but the car would not go over 50 mph. After hookup, and marking the positon of it, I rotated it around, and idle stayed the same.
Later, I pulled the connection to the MAF. I could hear the motor on the induction control valve drive, and the idle lowered to around 750 rpm. Hooked it back up, and the idle went higher again.
Could my MAF be the issue, or throttle postion sensor? Could the both be double teaming me?

Twas the IAC after all

Armed with a discount coupon, I had a garage do a diagnosis for the code. It ran me 50 dollars, and confirmed an IAC problem. The shop's only source of a new IAC was the entire throttle body from the dealer. Estimate for parts and labor was $968. It was made plain before troubleshooting I just wanted a diagnosis, so it was not a surprise that I turned it down. A sorento/sedona IAC is due via ebay. In the meantime the vehicle is driveable.

I needed an IAC O-ring, and the KIA dealer doesn't have a listing. My Harbor Freight O-ring set was not a help either. I went to the Mitsu. parts department and had them look up their model which uses the same IAC (2002 mirage ).
Mitsu. part number is MD614417.

Your good tip, Kia sedona '05 IAC O-ring can use the Mitsu part number MD614417. (2002 mirage )

Thanks!!!!

about 3 years ago we had a severe overheat from a stuck thermostat. About this time the IAC failed. About 2 years later the replacement one started acting up, and I would clean it for a short relief. I would notice a buildup of a milky layer on it too. I recently cleaned the throttle body off the car, and noticed the water hoses on it in the area of where the IAC is.
Could the overheat issue have killed the first IAC, and caused a small leak in the water chamber gasket to repeatedly foul the other IAC?
I found a replacement throttle body and installed it last night, and so far, the car has had no idle issues.

Throttle body post mortem

I removed the water chamber from the bottom of the old thorottle body. The flat part at the top of the assembly below the tube is where the IAC goes.
In the attachment, the lower 2 passages with the corrosion are idle passages. The spring visible is part of a plunger valve, which I figure is activated by coolant temperature. This valve opens a passage to the corroded passage on the left. This is a 2nd passage at the tip of the IAC. Also in this area is a either an air bleed, or jet passage. So there must be a second part of the idle system.
I filled this area of the with carb cleaner, and it was soon flowing out of one of the coolant passages.

Working IAC or not, this thing was hopeless.

If your IAC gives you grief, I fixed mine by buying 2003 Kia Sorento IAC. They sell it by itself at RockAuto. They work great. Don't buy the Mitsu part.

Much cheaper than buying a whole Throttle body.

I found every parts source listing the IAC from the sedona and sorento as different units. Funny thing is they have the same part number. With the dealer including the IAC as part of the TB on the sedona, the usual result is no separate part number is shown for the sedona IAC. It just takes some sleuthing to figure it out.
