I almost forgot to ask this very important question. I know lots of you guys might be familiar with this type of transmission. When I bought my Sorento CRDi which is a Korean Market version, it comes with dual transmission, auto and tiptronic with + and - sign. Since the catalog that came with the vehicle is in Korean language, I never bothered to use the tiptronic gate fearing I will damage it. Even the dealer is not familiar with it. Someone told me to go up next gear, I should click it on + (positive) side and to do gear down, click it on the - (negative) side. It's a five speed trans. My question is, what if I'm running on 5th gear and do a sudden stop, what I will do with the transmission then? I heard that this tiptronic type is good if you want a more quicker response from the engine. Please help me :crying:

I have the same 5 speed auto trans in my Australian model. the manual tells me that "in sports mode, downshifts are made automatically when the vehicle slows down. When the vehicle stops, 1st gear is automatically selected".

In short, while it lets you play with selecting gears it will take over and automatically change down if you dont.

Just slide the transmission lever to the +/- gate, you can then play with the gears yourself, the system is self protecting, it will not allow you to try anything potentially damaging.
If you slow, then it will select the correct gear, if you try to ove rev it will shift up.

It's good then if it's self-protecting. Meaning if I'm on 5th gear and do the full stop, the transmission will automatically downshift to 1st gear and when I over rev it and don't do the gearshift myself, it will automatically upshift itself. So it's like an auto trans too difference is with tiptronic, it allows the driver to play with the gear change right ?

yes it allows ya to change gears when you think is nessary. I have this option in my Optima and I love it. I use it quite a bit.

The other interesting points are 1: it changes down as you cross over into "tip-tronic" from "auto" as it assumes you're doing so to pass or accellerate and 2: It acts as a "sports mode" as if you just leave it there and drive hard it will only shift up at max revs in each gear. So it's actually a "multi function" type situation. Also absolutely perfect for off-road control when decending hills etc.

Here is my experience from using the Tiptronic on the CRDi:
1. The Tiptronic is very useful for slowing down the Sorento when going downhill. When doing so you should try to select the gear that holds the Sorento at constant speed and does not allow it to accelerate. It will not allow you to over rev the engine so the lowest gear permitted is typically the best one.
2. Preventing the sorento to up shift, when going off road, some times you want to keep it in 1st or 2nd gear, will not shift if you do not over rev.
3. Accelerating - best to leave in auto the Tiptronic will change gears as in auto mode.

The Tiptronic adds some options to the way you can use the automatic box it is not intended for the enthusiastic driver.

Like you I also have a Korean unit, I am fron Cebu City, Philippines, which goes with the tiptronic transmission. Yes, its a wonder to have this, when you slide to +/-, its ok whether you are on the run or in stand still, its perfectly safe. And when you are on the 5th gear and u are slowing down, going to a full stop, it then returns the gearing to the 1st gear. Think of it as a clutchless manual transmission but smoother. So you can decide/control when you are going to shift up/down, rev up, rev down(am I sure about this).. Cheers...

Couple more things too. It will force an upshift when it hits the upper part of the rev range instead of redlining or using the rev limiter.

As well if going from automatic to manual it will as said force downshift but if you push it forward as you put it in manual mode it will go into 5th without downshifting at all. Just a tip.
