The left-hand handbrake cable looks to need replacing as it doesn't release properly when the handbrake is off (if you look at the adjuster from inside the car you can see that cable is much further forward than on the left then the right and the 'compensator' is at an acute angle. This levels up a lot once the lever is pulled on). Been under the car and the actuating arm works fine once the cable is released and the arm tapped back with a hammer but once the handbrake is pulled on then let off the spring on the actuator isn't strong enough to overcome the friction from the cable and you can see the actuator arm position is very different from left to right.

Anyway, has anyone replaced a handbrake cable and is it straightforward ? I can see the mounting brackets that need to be undone but not sure how it passes through the floorpan into the car. Do you need to just remove the centre console to guide it though or lift the carpet as well ?

Finally replaced the cable. Quite straightforward - four mounting clips to unbolt. Pushes up through floorplan. Helps to undo bolt at back of centre console so you can lift the rear of it up and get better access to the end of the cable. On old one the inner cable wass jammed solid within the outer !?

Note: Don't try and buy the cable from a motor factors - they sent me 2 wrong ones and third supplier had a recall on their cables. Got it from Kia in the end for £38.
