Just driven to the Post Office and when starting off again, I heard this terrible screeching sound from the front of the car. Drive-shaft shearing off? Disk brake falling apart?

Actually, it was a small piece of road gravel (6mm) lodged between the inside of the front disk and the disk shroud. Easily removed and no damage to the disk. Phew!

How did it get there? The piece of gravel had fresh tar on it, and I suspect that it had been thrown into the wheel and had stuck there until it ended up above the brake rotor and melted off (it was a hot day and I had been also using the brakes a fair bit).

I will now be checking the inside of the other wheels, as I remember going over some fresh roadworks a few weeks ago.
