I noticed on my 02 shortage today on the left side and the very back of the frame rail right behind of the tire there is a hole throught it from rust it seems solid just the center part for about 6 inches is eaten out with rust.

Should I be worried? Is this a common thing? How do I fix it?

Thanks

It wont fix itself and wont stop. Clean up the frame, weld new material in, neutralize the rust and seal with good rust proofing...

Use a welding/body hammer with a pick, check the rest of the frame, including cross members......Philip

If you cannot do the work yourself, hire a welder/metal worker..... Do not use a body shop, they are too expensive and this is not their forte....

Check the body mount areas, for perforation.....Philip

Definitely get it fixed. The most common areas that rust through on the old Sportages is where yours is, on either side, and the right side frame rail starting at about the rear of the front tire back to the transmission cross member. But like aquanaut said, the entire frame should be checked.
