Hello All,

New to this forum having just taken delivery of a nice new SE+ complete with "free" DVD player. Trouble is, the DVD only comes with two sets of headphones and as we have five kids, you can imagine the disputes we could be in for during long journeys - better to have no DVD at all. The dealer initially quoted me for new headphones at £50 a shot, but after I bit of haggling I've got him down to £119 for the three, still costing me more than I'd wished for a "free" DVD player! The option of an FM modulator to play the sound over the stereo is about the same at £116.

My question is, has anyone seen better prices for these headphones? The DVD player is the Rosen A7 roof mounted player (i.e. nothing under the seats) and has no external sockets fitted as standard so plugging a set of speakers in isn't an option.

Also seen on a couple of other threads that these headphones aren't particularly great anyway and give people headaches - is this a common experience?

Any advice would be welcome,

cheers,

Gav

I bought another 2 pairs off ebay and they work fine along with the original 2 pairs, but this is for another screen altogether.

I also saw the posts about the headphones giving headaches so I've kept it in mind but not told the others, because if I did tell them they'd immediately get headaches, if you sort of know what I mean.

Hello Gav1966,
I had an FM modulator fitted to my new Sedona in Feb. this year, and it wasn't £116.

I have the bill in front of me now, and it was £222.66 in total!!!

I was told it would be about £100, but nobody mentioned the fitting charges or the V.A.T. I had wrongly assumed that 'about £100' included everything. I was not a happy chappy when I was presented with the bill, although I accept now that it was my own fault because I should have made absolutely certain what the £100 included. If I had been told £222.66 in the first place, I would not have had it done.

the headphones are rubbish, I got 2 additional sets for free when I bought my car (they told me they were £30 new), as we have 4 kids that is fine, but if you turn your head they crackle, are ill fitting for smaller children. in actual fact the only good thing is you can talk about private things when they are watching, but the amount of faffing about changing batteries, adjusting volume adjusting seats taking off when they fall asleep.

you can get cheap fm modulators of ebay for about £20 (remember these are illegal in the UK ;))

I actually plug our creative 2:1 computer speakers into an invertor and the dvd and let them listen to it that way, you may find if you have the "good" kia stereo it has a built in AV input to plug the dvd audio straight into. to be honest they are only really going to watch the dvd on journeys longer than 30-60 minutes anyway.

good luck, but I do suggest that you attempt to watch a whole dvd using the headphones from different seats before you part with more cash.

sorry scratch most of my post, I didn't see that you cannot touch any connectors at the back of the DVD player, what a terrible design, how on earth are you supposed to plug in a game cube or playstation into the back to play games in the car.

from the wiring diagram you would need to take the console off and route your own audio cables.

Hi
Maplin (maplin.co.uk) sell a UK legal FM modulator for £19.99 - go to maplin.co.uk and look for part number L75AY. Basically you connect the existing aerial to the modulator, connect the modulator aerial output to the stereo, and connect the modulator to the dvd via the RCA connectors.

Thanks for the replies. Out of interest, you can get an RCA mounting kit fitted which will allow you to plug in games consoles - but guess what - this is another dealer fitted "optional extra." This so called free DVD player is getting more expensive by the minute. On the plus side, the roof mounted design is quite neat and doesn't leave you with a box under the driver seat which looked to me like it could easily be kicked by accident.

T oget anyform of RCA out/input you would need the adpator loom for that rosen DVD player, there are no RCA's behind the unit in the roof, only 2/3 rows of pins.

I'm beginning to think the set up I ended up with after all the faffing around is pretty good.
I've got a second input in the actual monitor on my unit and I've got the secondary line outs for a speaker system for the kids so I can plug a set of computer speakers into it.

I've also put a piece of board with velcro across the front of the dvd player, cos I could see my kids kicking the **** out of it over time!

Nothing extra of real use to add other than before purchasing any further headsets see how you get on with the ones supplied.

Yes I know you have a different setup but the ones I have for my UK dealer fitted setup are Carp. As mentioned by clartsonly they crackle constantly and there is no way of adjusting them. I hard wired mine into the head in the dash.

i agree with the kicking side of it, although it is usually a tin of beans out of a sainsburies bag flying across the floor under some form of hard breaking I have already had to stick the facia back onto the player once.

but I can connect an additional input device and switch between AV input one or two through the DVD and intercept the audio lines to go to speakers instead of to the monitor infrared output. the head phones suck ( or at least the type I have do ), also I think Headphones are quite bad for health and safety anyway.

OFF TOPIC:
did you know that everytime you ears hear a frequency sound, the hair gets damaged a bit, eventually the hair dies completely and you can no longer hear that fvrequency.

Why have they changed the type of DVD player ? I have a Centurion one fitted under the drivers seat and although its akward to access it's a lot easier to connect other stuff to. Is it because they have had problems with the Centurion one ? The player in mine has developed a fault and I have been waiting for about 4 weeks now for a replacement to be delivered to the dealer !

This new one looks more bulky on the roof - the screen on mine is quite discreet when folded up, this one looks likely to attract the unwanted attention of thieves.
