Hello all, my first post after intro. I have covered 6400miles in my first year with my XS 5speed auto. I have noticed - particularly in the recent cold spell- that I (well, the Sorento actually) get a fair cloud of diesel smelling blue smoke from the exhaust on a cold start. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas why?

Hi,
I have the same vehicle as you but with the manual box (now with nearly 11K miles) & from time-to-time, I too get this but I actually don't think it is anything untoward - however Murphwitz might know !

Are you letting the pre heat do it's job or just trying to start from cold. Pre heat is required below a certain temp which I think is about 5c. I've had a few diesel vehicles and if you don't use it you will get a cloud of smoke from a cold engine, also I have found you would get a lack of smoothness till the engine has run for a short period.
I will admit I hardly ever start without using this. Now the debate is am I right or wrong? But I have been driving diesels this way for many years.

Thanks for this but yes, I do allow the engine pre heat to function before starting which, as you suggest, is the correct procedure. the engine does run very rough for a few seconds whilst it is smoking.
