I dont know too much about cars, but i do know to get oil changes. I followed the "normal" usage, since i only do high way driving to work everyday. Realistically the majority of weather in chicago isnt "extreme" most of the year, and in cold months i generally drive my wifes SUV. So i followed getting oil changes every 7000 miles since it says 7500 I believe for normal usage up until about 60k miles, then one day i ran out of oil, and they did an engine flush and refilled the oil, did 2 oil consumption tests over the next 20k miles, and no burning oil was found.

So i followed the 3750 ever since that first time, but now im out of oil again. I'm burning oil, and i'm worried they wont honor the warranty. is this my fault? Can they decline it if i followed the normal usage maintenance for the first half of the cars life?

What's the mileage now?

The title is "Engine sludge?" - did you find sludge, and if so, at what mileage?

Who has been doing the servicing?

Low engine temperature will lead to sludge - does your engine reach normal operating temperature soon after starting?

What alerted you to being "out of oil"? - oil light or dipstick?

If an engine flush is done, there should be a few oil changes in quick succession thereafter - was that done?

My mileage is 99k and its at the shop with an on and off oil light.l getting investigated right now. I was following 7k oil changes until about 65k miles, where one day i had an oil light come on so i had it towed to kia. They found some sludge, and did a flush. They didnt tell me to come back for oil changes anymore than the 3750 for extreme use. I did do a consumption test where they topped it off each time, so maybe that replaced getting frequent changes for them?

I had a second oil consumption test bc i didn't believe them that it wasn't burning oil, and again i was told its not burning. So i tested it on my last oil change before my warranty was over, and didn't top off at any point. and i ran out of oil 3000 miles into the oil change.

I just dont want my warranty void, bc i honestly thought i was taking care of my car properly given the manual.

I'd even add, I would occasionally get oil changes at 5k too. pretty much all my oil changes were within 5k-7k. Should sludge really buildup from that? Alot of my early oil changes were at NTB, is it likely they screwed up one time?

idk if it will help me, but the service dept only asked for 1 years worth of oil changes, and all of them in the past year has been with Kia.

If there are no leaks then obviously the engine is burning oil. Burning oil won't cause warranty issues. Some engines just burn oil. Just keep topping it off as needed because if you run the engine with no oil then of course they will not honor the warranty.

As far as the sludge, as the previous poster asked, are you taking short trips? If you take fairly long trips regularly I would think the oil sludge thing was just a scam to get more money out of you.

The answer to those questions may shed more light on it.

Following oil change schedule and not checking oil level between oil changes causing 'running out of oil' are two different things.
Make it a habit to check oil level at least a day after oil change and at every next 5-6 gas fill ups.

I had Forte worked on by dealer under warranty, not only they didn't fix the issue while working on it twice but second time we picked up the car top rad hose was loose causing coolant loss. Only discovered after wife brought the car home from the dealer.
