Hello - the engine on my 2011 Kia Optima has "seized." Kia dealership is saying the engine needs to be replaced. Kia is NOT honoring their warranty. They are blaming me. They said the engine oil is dirty so that means I didnt change it "enough"...they are just trying to weasel out of paying for the engine. Before they even knew what was wrong with it, Kia did NOT give me a loaner vehicle to use, they did NOT offer to pay for a rental, and the dealer sat on it for a week before even telling me whats wrong with it. This is BY FAR the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Kia is a low-budget, low ball company...I will never deal with these bozos ever again.

Bottom line: I do NOT have $7,000 to fix this piece of garbage....I need to break the lease and just tell Kia to take their piece of junk back because I just cant afford to fix it...When I called Kia Finance and told them the story, they said something about Kia picking up the car at the dealership and then auctioning it off...and then my understanding gets fuzzy with regard to what happens after that.

What may happen? What is the risk in doing this? Has anyone been through this?

Do you have records of when the oil changes occured? Did they do the changes? Indy shop do them?

Most oils will look "dirty" after a few thousand kms, and you need more than dirty oil for an engine to seize. Usually, it's overheating due to lack of oil or water, or possibly fuel detonation.

I dont have oil records because the station I used to go to has closed down and I never kept copies of receipts, although I know I should have...stupid me, just never occurred to me that such a a thing would happen.

I have asked other mechanics and they say that there is no reason why a brand new engine with 20,000 miles should seize like that - especially since there was never any indication that anything was wrong. There was NO oil light lit, NO service engine soon light, NO rough riding at all...nothing at all was wrong before the engine seized. Two of the 4 mechanics I spoke to said that, even if I NEVER changed the oil in 20,000 miles, the engine should NOT have seized. The bottom line is that the GDI engine is an inferior product and Kia is shamelessly NOT standing by it. But no worries, I WILL be suing them, for sure.

But right now I am more interested in the answer to the question I am asking about the ramifications of surrendering the vehicle to Kia and breaking the lease, and having then auction the vehicle off, which is what I guess they do. I'm not sure if they fix it first. What kind of financial loss am I looking at? What other ramifications are there? Is it better to do this than take out a loan from a bank to pay for these repairs?

THIS IS A NIGHTMARE!!! NEVER AGAIN, KIA!!!

It would probably best for you to purchase your next vehicle before you break the lease. If you do just walk away from your Kia, it will hit your credit hard, which could prevent you from getting financing on you next car.


Just remember you said this when you try to sue them.

Seen this before on these forums relating to no oil change records...

Get the better business bureau involved in arbitration...

Get an ASE mechanic involved in the engine tear-down (hopefully at the dealership) but
if not at an ASE shop WITH a notory witness there...

Get an oil analisis lab involved (Blackstone Labs) and supply a notory witnessed sample of the "bad oil" removed from your engine...

Keep the address and name handy of the service shop that the oil was changed at (even if they did close their doors) to show you did the changes (your attempt to comply with KIAs warranty requirements)

NOW contact KIA Corporate with the above findings.
A frozen engine can happen with one bad bearing straight from KIA...If the rest of the bearings and cam lobes are OK and the oil analysis comes back as OK then confront KIA and the dealership with these facts and "if" no go... Proceed to legal means...

KEEP COOL... DO NOT... Threaten or use profanity...Give them NOTHING to use against you in a court of law...

I agree with SpongeBob on a KIA take back...Your credit will drop to ZERO
as the car was "repossessed" for YOUR failing to meet the contractual agreement YOU signed... If you go that way BUY your next car BEFORE allowing them to take the KIA back.

Thank you for all that advice - makes sense. Besides bad credit, I believe I will also be held accountable for the repair of the car...or something to that effect.

AND what about the repairs - would I be still held accountable for that if they take the car back?

By the way what does an oil analysis prove or disprove? How exactly can that information hurt or help me?

Do I HAVE to go to the dealer to fix it - or can any licensed and reputable mechanic fix it? Is the fact that its a GDI engine make it something difficult to repair if youre not from the dealership?

If your going to pay out of your own pocket then of course you take it were ever you like to. I dought you will find a junk yard engine, (Little to new, but you never know), It will back to a Kia dealership to buy a new engine. Good luck. When was the last time you changed the oil?

Depends on your actual maintainence of the car..."if" you changed the oil say every 5k miles (4 changes) the particulate levels will be low, the additives will still be there, and the lubricating ability of the oil will still be good enough to protect the engine from wear or damage. It can either help you if you are honest or hurt you if you did not do the required upkeep.

As far as repairs to the car "if" it has been returned to KIA...
The resale value of the car no longer is as high as it could have been because of the engine failure...and KIA (the credit lender) could not recoup that value so that amount will count against your credit record also... This will affect your credit history for 7 years.

If you can't get KIA to do the repair (either at a discount or full warranty)..I would look into a used replacement engine (try car-part.com for a local salvage yard) and repairing/driving the car until the lease is up.. The cost of a low mileage used engine and the labor to install it would be up to you so an independent ASE mechanic working "outside" of a KIA dealership may save you thousands of dollars in repair costs. It restores the value of the car. And you don't have a bad "hit" on your credit record to live with for 7 years.
Here is a 2.4L non-turbo (non california) engine in Danville Il with under 5K miles on it
for under $2250 shipped to a local business.
11 Kia Optima Engine 2 4L | eBay.
Probably under thousand dollars labor to install and for $3350 you have a running car.
There is also a "make an offer" button for this engine...

Thank you, Dave.....the engine you show is for a Hybrid, mine isnt a hybrid....but I appreciate all your input.

I am going to have the car towed to an independent mechanic that I have known for 20 years. I know he will be at 30% cheaper than the dealer. Moreover, the dealer has had the car sitting in his lot for over 2 weeks before giving me an estimate and they will not pay for the rental - even partially....nothing. Had they given me an estime 10 days ago, I would have taken the car from them at that time. These Kia people are mean-spirited, cruel scum...they offered 30 dollars a day and then reneged.

The ebay/engine link says NON-HYBRID. The first year for the Optima Hybrid was 2012. This car is a 2011, 2.4, just like the one in your Sorento. We all know this a very bad outcome for you, but don't blame Kia....Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, same outcome, no reciepts for oil changes, NO WARRANTY! I've worked for all of them, and in this case you would be out to dry just like Kia. I know this does not help you, just saying.

It could hurt you if it confirms that the oil is way over it's useful life, or possibly the wrong grade.

It could help you if it is confirmed in good condition and the correct grade.

You mention that the service centre that you used went out of business - how sure can you be that they didn't take you for a ride?

IF you REALLY wanted to buy this engine you could call them to find out for sure! I'm not making any excuses for Kia, ALL car companys will demand recepits for oil changes..............and will for sure when you blow you engine like you have.
Ron made a GREAT point, the out of biz shop might not have ever have changed your oil???

Your statement has no logic in it. As long as you keep record of oil changes you should be good. If car company demands oil change receipt, what is next? I have to buy gas from VERY particular gas station?
I do my own oil changes even while car is under warranty. Sorry, I do not trust those '5 minutes oil changes' shops. But maybe it is different logic for rented cars (leasing is just fancy name for renting; car is NOT yours...).

Do you really think it's reasonable to expect any car manufacturer to have unconditional warranty and guarantees? - with that logic, the boy racer could get away with doing zero maintenance, risky modifications, punish the vehicle, and expect a new engine as and when he destroys each one.

The US warranty rules lean in favour of the customer, and unlike many other countries, manufacturers allow third party servicing and even owner servicing with minimal supporting documentation.

There is a legal document regulating this, it came with your car - the maintenance and warranty section of the owners handbook.

I hope the OP ends up with a good result, and confident folks here will offer good guidance - just promoting that people keep their demands reasonable.

Ron, the point "maybekia" is trying to make is that there is NO requirement that dictates that someone MUST go to service station to get the oil changed. Moreover, there is NO requirement that says that, in the event of a breakdown, the person MUST produce receipts from a service station. The owners manual says NO SUCH THING. Yes, it says you should change your oil and rotate your tires, etc...but absolutely NOTHING that says it must be done by an authorized service station OR that you must show receipts as proof it was done.

Without specifically stating that failure to do either of the above (go to a service station and produce receipts if asked) will result in a void of the warranty, then Kia MUST honor the agreement. In the end, there is NO proof of any wrongdoing, They are looking at dirty oil and saying "its your fault."

Without demanding that a SPECIFIC checklist of maintenance tasks be satisfied with proved, then they have no right to make an arbitrary judgement that the car "was not maintained properly" and thereby refuse to honor the warranty.

And by the way, I find it utterly BIZARRE that some people on here think that offering a loaner or paying for a rental is something that "no other dealer does." Are they kidding or what????

Offering a loaner to a client who is having a problem with their leased car is so commonplace that its absurd to even question it. The FIRST thing the dealer said was "sorry, Kia does NOT make any provisions for a loaner OR for paying for a rental" in the event that the leased car breaks down.
