I've read a few articles on the net about ways to increase fuel efficiency. It was mentioned that sitting in your driveway for a while "waiting for the engine to warm up" is a bad thing. I can see the logic behind this, but...

Can someone tell me the benefits/drawbacks of a engine block heater. Do they interfere with remote starts?

the block heater is good if you live in an extremely cold climate like canada or alaska, maybe north chicago. It's only designed to keep the oil warm enough to flow when its very cold outside.

Now a heater the amanti could use is a trans heater, I have driven 3-5 miles before my TQ converter will lock up putting the car in over drive. Until that happens I only get low 20's at best, after lock up it will jump up to high 20's, doesn't matter if the engine is warmed up or not the trans has its own temp sensor. Oh this is only in the winter in relatively the mild climate on NENC. Above about 50-60F it will lock up right way, as the temp goes down it takes longer and longer. If you live in town/city or the suburbs you won't notice.

I have a remote start and can warm my car up for 10+ minutes in the winter with no effects on trans performance versus stone cold no warm-up, it takes just as long either way.

As a Southern California native, extreme cold isn't a concern. But during the winter, we can see 30-40's at night.

I was just asking to see if it might help avoid cold starts. Thanks for the info!
