I have a 2001 Sportage convertible. I recently replaced a bad u-joint on the rear of my driveshaft. It’s a one piece shaft, so it’s a pretty much simple and straight forward process. Upon driving the car for the first time after replacement, I noticed a vibration in the shaft. I removed and completely inspected my work to insure no mistakes were made. Still had the vibration. I removed the shaft and installed another new u-joint. I still have the same vibration and the its bad enough at highway speeds that I’m afraid to drive it too fast. I’ve been a mechanic for 35 years and have never had this much trouble from a u-joint job. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Did you mark the shaft with chauk prior to disassembly? You might be clocked off location. Look for witness marks of original set up. Look at the shaft to see if any balance weight got knocked off. Like a spot weld missing additional metal.

I check the balance blocks but not the orientation of the shaft to the rear yoke. What a dumb mistake! I’ll have a look at that next. Thanks for your input and please forgive my slip up. I had a 50/50 chance or getting it right or wrong. I hope that’s the problem! And thanks again.

Let us know if you get it back to original. Always mark your jobs with chauk beforehand! Good luck!
