I haven’t done it to the Sportage but for plastic cartridge housings I just turn them until they’re completely in, flush with the other part and that’s it.

I have the G2.5L GDi 4-Cylinder G4KNPK14. My oil filter housing is plastic. It calls for 25+5Nm. I translated this to 18-22 ft-lb. I torque mine to 19 ft-lb.

 

Just an update to my original post. I did my 1st oil & filter change today (26 Sportage SXP Hybrid) and I must say, the Kia design oil filter SUCKS. It takes 100 times longer to chance that stupid oil filter than a standard canister style. And you better do it correctly or your going to have a leak. I'd never allow a dealership's low man on the totem pole change that filter, or even a quick change lube shop.

And FWIW I torqued the filter housing to the spec called out on the housing base (35 Nm or 26 ft/lbs). Before I removed the original factory installed filter I marked the housing with white paint as shown in the attached photo. After I reinstalled the new filter and torqued it to the 35Nm spec the white marks almost perfectly aligned again, so the torque spec in my opinion should be followed.

 

Good and tight is all it needs.

 

Tighten until it breaks then back off 1/2 turn. J/K. Really.
