does anyone use 5w-20 oil?

ive been thinking about this, since I live in a very warm climate what's the point of using 0w-20 instead of 5w-20?

or is the difference so small that it doesn't matter either way?

Yes I do, I only do though because I have a stock pile with receipts of 5w-20 that meets every other criteria. The only difference is “5” vs “0”.
If I was buying it for each oil change I would just go with 0w-20 as the spec shows.
IMHO:
  • if you care about miniscule gas mileage gains - stick with 0w-20, Mobil1 ESP is an excellent oil
  • 'regular' oil changes every 4k miles - 5w-20
  • if you care about engine life - go with Mobil1 ESP 5w-30 (or 0w-30) or Pennzoil Euro LX 0w-30. These oils are superior to SP or D1G3 oils.
Oils that meet VW 504/507 while being ACEA C2/3 and MB 229.52 are excellent in all regards - oxidation, wear, soot and deposits; and are suited for extended drain intervals too if you decide to go with oil change intervals greater than 5-6k miles.

I just performed my break in oil change at 2600mi on my new ‘23 Rio 5. I used Amsoil 0w-20 and am wondering about the same question. Anyone correct me if I am wrong but the first weight number is the viscosity when cold and the second number is the viscosity when the oil is warm. The advantage I see in using 5w-20 would be more engine protection during start up and warming.

Right now, the only reason for me to continue to use 0w-20 is to not void the warranty.
basically from what i understand if you live in NC or further south the difference is minimal at best for most of the year

i already have a large stockpile of 0w-20 or id probably switch to the 5w-20

The “0” v “5” debate is long and will never be settled. It seems Your thought is that the “5” provides better protection during start up.
Pro “0” debaters would say that the thinner oil flows faster when cold so it actually provides better engine protection.
My thought is that in my climate cold flow ability is not much different. I have lots of free after rebate 5w20 so i will use it. The oil meets all the specs required by kia in my rio 5 manual. Its just a “5” instead of a zero. The “0” was probably chosen by KIA partly to apease CAFE milage standards. With my oil change routine of 4-5k miles and my work day commute of 16 miles each way. I have not noticed any calculable change in milage, and yes I calculate each tank manually not by watching the built in vehicle mpg estimator in the dash.
