I purchased my 2016 Sorento EX 2.0T with the intention of getting a pop up camper at some point in the future. I currently tent camp and the car gets full with all the gear, dog and kid. It would be nice to get the gear into a trailer. My options for now are a 6x4 cargo trailer (rent for $25 per day) in which case I only need to purchase the 4 pin wiring harness for $60 cdn.

Next option is a tent trailer. Some used models in my area are ~2,950 GVWR with a 215lb hitch weight. This is well within the 3,500lb tow rating and would allow me to get most of my gear out of the Sorento into the trailer. I don't see any issue with this, do you?

I have been quoted ~$390 cdn for a brake controller to be installed (Tekonsha Primus). Does that sound reasonable?

Some older tent trailers seem to come standard with hydraulic surge brakes. Any problem running with these instead of electric brakes with a controller?

I had the Kia hitch installed when I bought the car. It states it is not suitable for use with a weight distribution hitch. Should I have a WDH for a tent trailer under 3000 lbs? What changes between the hitch itself that is or is not WDH suitable?

I started with a 16' trailer with a dry weight of 1650 pounds, and recently upgraded to a Coachmen Clipper 17fq which has a dry weight of just over 2700 lbs. Last weekend we did a rather extreme test to see how well the Kia could do towing the trailer up a mountain on a secondary road that has a speed limit of 55. The results were disappointing. It was about a 1200-foot climb over 3 miles with some very steep sections, and I had to drop down to 3rd. The Kia felt significantly under-powered and could only maintain a speed of 35 mph.

I'm not giving up yet on the Sorento as our tow vehicle--I want to try the same mountain on the interstate, which it longer but not as steep--to see if I can maintain a speed of at least 40-45 mph. Given that I have to cross this mountain to go just about anywhere we hope to travel, I need to make sure I can do this safely.

Weight is only one consideration - profile is another, equally important one. You're basically towing a box and resistance increases exponentially with speed and overcoming resistance takes the same proportionate amount of horsepower and torque as does pure weight. Towing a pop up camper is easier than towing an actual box camper and is probably where the Sorento is better suited.
