Idling blows black smoke
will not rev past 2500 (sort of soft revs)
will not accelerate (like stalls when put foot down in driveway)

Turbo:
how do i test that?

Sensors:
anything I should check?

Replaced:
EGR + Cooler (now blows less black smoke), did help

First read DTC from ECU, if you are in limp mode there must be some active DTC in ECU. According DTC you can focus on problematic part: pressure sensor, MFA, lambdas, turbo, injectors.

Tell us some history.

Did you just purchase this and are trying to fix it?

Was everything OK and then this started out of the blue?

Did you perform any type of maintenance recently such as changing any filters?

I have owned since new, 114,000 ks. with no real issues.
I was just driving home from work one day and it started to loss power and blow black smoke.
That was during the last 10 minutes of driving, arrived home, then just trouble shooting from there.
Car has no real power to drive down the road, but will idle down the road in Drive or Reverse (5ks per hour i guess) blows black smoke. Does not like it when you press the accelerator. as in wants to die.
There were a few trouble codes.. EGR. then re-set the codes... and checked next day and there were no codes... (car idling)

Has the ecu thrown any codes?

The not revving past 2500rpm sounds like its in limp mode. I've had this happen from two different errors
Found a screen shoot of the Kia ECU Error Codes, the day after I checked with OBD11

P0193 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input
P0253 Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control “A” Low
P0091 Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit Low
P0101 Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit
P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High
B2aaa ?

Three weeks later after the EGR was replaced, there were no code errors.

Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Oil + Filter all changed last week
Still no acceleration and blows Black Smoke.

I suspect a bad valve. Maybe perform a compression test ?
Compression Test, what is the best method, remove injectors or flow plugs?
If it was a valve what other synonyms would the motor be displaying?
Guessing there would be a popping noise, either back threw the inlet or exhaust.
Any thoughts?

I don't know much about diesels, but I found a list of possible reasons on a Mercedes-Benz resource site. Sounds like it's a rich gas mixture...too much gas or too little oxygen. Long list of reasons. Another site indicated to check the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Good luck and let us know what you find:

1. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - plugged fuel filters
Solution: Fuel filters
Difficulty Level: 1

2. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - not getting hot enough
Solution: Diesel thermostat
Difficulty Level: 1

3. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - restricted air exhaust
Solution: Air filter / muffler / turbo
Difficulty Level: 1/3

4. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - gummed injection system
Solution: Diesel Purge
Difficulty Level: 1

5. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - excess carbon buildup
Solution: EGR valve
Difficulty Level: 1

6. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - low fuel flow to injections
Solution: Diesel Performance Tuning and Repair
Difficulty Level: 2

7. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - poor compression
Solution: Valve adjusting wrench
Difficulty Level: 2

8. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - poor compression
Solution: Compression tester
Difficulty Level: 2

9. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - poor or incorrect fuel
Solution: Change fuel / diesel purge
Difficulty Level: 1

10. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - air getting into fuel system
Solution: Fuel line replacement kit
Difficulty Level: 2

11. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - air getting into fuel system
Solution: Hand primer pump
Difficulty Level: 1

12. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - bad fuel injectors
Solution: Fuel Injectors
Difficulty Level: 2

13. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - internal engine timing
Solution: Timing chain
Difficulty Level: 3

14. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - incorrect injection pump timing
Solution: Diesel Performance Tuning manual
Difficulty Level: 3

15. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine runs bad - worn injection pump
Solution: Injection pump delivery valve
Difficulty Level: 2

16. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine smokes bad - poor engine ventilation
Solution: Breather upgrade
Difficulty Level: 1

17. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine smokes bad - worn valve stem seals
Solution: Valve stem seals kit
Difficulty Level: 4

18. Common Smoke & Power Problems: Engine smokes bad - turbo seals gone

black smoke means too much fuel, if there is plenty of black smoke, then it is breathing (no clogs), and just adding too much fuel (because it thinks it dosent have enough). The question is why dose in think it has too little fuel?

"P0193 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input
P0253 Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control “A” Low
P0091 Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit Low"

My assumption on the codes:
P0101 Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit

Is because it dose not know how much fuel it is adding (and putting too much in) it thinks it isn't receiving enough air, and that the intake sensors are bad (Mass airflow equals amount of air and intake air temp the density of said air).

The excess fuel is out of emissions spec causing the final code. Your fuel to air ratio is way off, and if you run your car this rich it will destroy your cat and canister.

Why is your car reading inaccurate fuel pressure (amount)? you can test this by several means, the most obvious to me would getting a live read of the fuel rail pressure sensor to see if it is erratic, or out of spec, if it is out of spec (which I am willing to bet it is), it could be a bad regulator or sensor, there should be plenty of information on how to test / troubleshoot that. What was the condition of the fuel filter you removed?

Not to downplay the importance of working with trouble codes, BUT.

It was posted that service work had RECENTLY been done, and that this happened "all of a sudden" going down the roadway. PLEASE check the MAF sensor wiring connector and intake air AND turbo boost pipes for coming loose or cracking. Unmetered air will cause a LOT of problems the computer can not adjust for and will set codes.

100% agree. My trouble shooting was based on his word that it was correct, and it might not be. I'm not very familiar with the boost curve on the diesel motors, however if it isn't getting the forced air it needs, that would equal too much fuel. Checking for boost leaks is very important. From what I have found looks like peak torque is from 1,800-3,500 rpm, without boost it would not rev much over 1800, and would have too much fuel. There is a code for low boost pressure however, and would assume it would throw the code if it did not have the correct amount of psi in the inter-cooler.

Sure would be NICE ETIQUETTE on a forum IF the OP would respond to at least SOME of the many who have posted of offered information and what they have so far done. AND if they are not capable to do such as has been suggested to let these same people know.
