Cruise Control Won't Set

38766 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Andre Smith
I have a 2007 Kia Spectra; each time I turn cruise on and move the lever to set; the set light flashes until the lever moves back to it's normal position. I just noticed this on my drive into work; as I am a heavy user of cruise control.

Does anyone know what might be causing this and where I should begin in trying to remedy the problem?

First thing is check your car for burned out stop light bulbs (#1157) and the center mounted one in the rear window. I've read that will keep the cruse from working...
Just a thought...
Please post your findings...

There are 2 different switches operated by the brake pedal. 1 for stop lights and 1 to cancel the set cruise.
In my car it was this 2nd switch which was getting stuck in the ON position. This would happen after heavy braking. Try pumpimg the brake pedal which might free it - or a new switch.

Thank you for this posting. My cruise on my 2005 kia spectra 5 has been giving me fits for the last few years. Up to now it was always very cold, below zero, and only temporary, like only a few miles, then it would work fine. This switch explanation seems to be a good answer. Just this week it's started when its warm out. I try to set the cruise but the cruise won't set. Not even a flicker of the set light. Last night when it did it I bumped the brake pedal a couple time and then it worked. This morning no amount of bumping worked. I'm thinking I need to change the switch.
I've noticed something that must be a firmware/ecu glitch. If i shut the car off with the cruise enabled - it won't set/work the next time i start the car and drive. But if you turn it off, then shut the car off - it will work as designed. I have the 2004.5/05 model with a push button on the column side selector.

Don't know if this helps, just thought i'd share.
Update: I found that the original switch was loose. I tightened it and it worked fine, for a couple of weeks, then it was loose again. And finicky again. This time I found that the threads were stripped. I ordered a new one from Amazon for $10. Oddly, it came with only one nut, and a smaller sized one at that, 14mm instead of 17mm. But it was only the wrench size that was different, not the switches stud size. I had to use a nut from the old switch to make it work. But work it did. Now I have Cruise again. And this time with a little locktite. :)

Manual vs Automatic

Just a quick note for those with manual transmissions:

In addition to the switch on the brake pedal assembly, there is a similar switch on the clutch pedal assembly. For my cruise setting issue, it turned out that the switch on the clutch pedal assembly was loose allowing the switch to be disengaged making it impossible to set the cruise control.

These are very simple switches that are easily disassembled for inspection. There are no motorized or electronic parts in these switches. They're basically just springs, electrical contacts, and plastic shafts. The simple action of pressing the brake or clutch pedal disengages the switch causing the electrical contacts to touch, closing the circuit, and turns off the cruise control.

Cruse comes on but won't set

Do not exchange standard 1157 tail/brake light bulb with led bulb, Tried this on 2009 Kia Spectram and cruise would not "set". Put standard bulbs in and cruise will now "set". Not sure why?????

Cruise won't set or disengage

Thanks for the thread : On my Kia sportage 2006 my "cruise" led will go on, my "set" light too. My cruise control was disengaging by itself randomly but did stay set longer at lower speed and disengage sooner at faster speed. Initialy though it was related to bad speed sensor or something like that. I did replace all my swithches at brake and clutch pedal as I had trouble in the past (75 000km ) and it did solve the problem. Now at 150 000km thought it would make sense. This was not the problem.

Few weeks ago I did replace my rear brake light with Chinese junk led light that had poor contact when brand new... Need to sand them down a bit to get them to work. I was not happy with them anyway because the brake intensity was not as bright as the oem lamps. Did not use my cruise for a while but it does "Set".

After reading this thread, I reinstalled the non-led oem one and no more cruise problem. So probably the circuit with led is not draining enough current and bumps were probably shaking the lamps resulting in open circuit, resulting in cruise disengaging.....

Strange that nothing about the brake lights is mentioned in the Kia sportage shop manual, they only mention that the horn need to work.

I now do enjoy my cruise like a new one

You are the best... I had a wire off on the clutch switch.
