Hi,
I have a new Cee'd 2011 model.
The car itself is great, really satisfied, but the software inside is just terrible.

One of the main problems I have is the radio.
I think its a shame that they even put a "Random" option when it has nothing to do with random. "Random" plays songs in the same order, always. Each time I start the car and turn on "Random" it plays in same order. For instance, song 1, song 15, song 50. And always in the same order.

Further more, "Random" doesn't access all the folders on the USB stick. I have 4 folders which never get played with "Random". I can access them manually, and play "Random" inside them. But the main "Random" (on all folders) never plays any songs located in those folders.

Maybe its not a big deal for everyone, but I get really annoyed by this, as the only solution is to turn on random and press the next button like a million times, until I get to some region where the I haven't been before, and I don't know the song playing order.

I have asked in my local servis dealer if they can update the software, but they say they can't, because they don't have any updates.

So, is it really the case, or are they just ignorant? I don't believe I'm the first person annoyed by this, and there really should be an update to fix this, because it's not behaving like it should.

Btw. I read in another tread that "Random" is not "perfect" because of the low capabilities of the computer inside. As a professional software developer I have to say this is total bullshit. If millions of other radio devices, and MP3 players(which are even smaller, and with lower hardware capabilities) have normal "Random", there isn't a reason why it wouldn't work here. Just bad software design, nothing more. The random "seed" is not generated from some variable number, but it is set to fixed value. Its a shame that in the 21st century they can't make a simple task as "Random" work like it should.

Sorry, for the long post, but I had to take out my frustration somewhere :)
So does anyone else have the same problem, or maybe found a way to fix it?

I'm even willing to buy a new radio, but the problem is that I want it to work with the central LED display in the car. Not all radios will do this, and (ofcourse) Kia doesn't provide a list of compatible radios. Also I have a bluetooth handsfree option installed in my car, so the new radio should work with that as well. Any suggestions?

Update: Oh yeah, and SDVC not working too.

Same problem with 2011 Cee'd

I have the exact same problem (and I am equally frustrated by) the non-functioning Random button with USB sourced MP3's on my 2011 Cee'd.
Even more frustrating is the inability for folders to be dragged & dropped altogether in one go onto USB stick and then for the car player to reliably sort the folders alphabetically. The only way I have been able to achieve this is to alphabetically pre-sort folders first within source directory on PC, then drag in alphabetical order onto USB stick one folder at a time. A complete pain!
On my player the Random function also only picks tracks from what appears to be the first 512 tracks stored on disk. Then plays in a 'non-random'/always the same 'random' order. Player seemed to really like playing the same Coldplay tracks..... got so fed up deleted all Coldplay albums from USB disk. Daresay some would say the player was doing me a favour! ;)
For info USB disk is a FAT formatted 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB flash drive; otherwise ideal for use as it is very compact (and thus does not catch or foul on the sliding tray above the USB socket on the console) and also does not have a flashing LED drive active indicator (which can be annoying in the dark on long night drives). I have around 2,000 mp3 tracks in around 160 folders and the majority are ripped at 256kbit/sec bit rate.

It's called "pseudo-random" in sw design.

I rarely use the random feature, like to listen to an album in correct order, however...
Some folders (not others) play their tunes in a stupid order at all times!
All my mp3 folders contents start
01 track name
02 track
03 track...

but some albums start with track 12, 5, 7 or whatever it feels like.
They always play tunes in same order, so Caspa always starts with track 5, Emalkay always plays 2,9,13,6...

It's not on Random mode, but plays like it is. Damn strange if you ask me :(

The whole unit is a piece of sh***t.
I don't know why, but I was under impression they made it better by reaching MY2001 model revision. Apparently not.

I wouldn't go that far, think it sounds ok & usually works fine, just messes up the order in 3 of the 20+ music folders on my stick. Don't know why those 3 specifically, which is annoying.

Those songs probably have track numbers in ID3 tags, and the radio tries to sort according to these. I don't see another explanation other than the radio simply being too weird.

I still think it's junk though, many reported problems, mine got replaced and it appears that I am fortunate enough with no need to replace it again, as it happened to some other folks here.

i use my iPod as musicprovider, but the fact that i can't choose my songs with my iPod is frustrating

also when u start your car without first plugging in your iPod and u plug in after, he starts playing from the beginning even if you where listening to another song before

i had the chance to accompany a friend in his volvo, he also uses his iPod for music in his car, now he can choose his songs with his iPod, so why can volvo do this for his cars but Kia can't?

it is not that much asked i think, or is it?
i think it can't be that difficult but what do i know about it, nothing really

The clock is on the same readout as the radio information. Date & time makes a seed that won't repeat... And how come they designed the display such that it doesn't show the time when the car is switched off?

I thought that & checked USB stick on work PC, all ID3 tags track # are correct in the oddly-sorted albums. I think it sorts according to 'when each track was copied to stick' rather than alphabetically though; it shouldn't really place "Adele 21" between Led Zep and Rush, nor should those 2 albums be anywhere near each other !! :D

Prevents any sort of dscharge in the car - the minimum displays / LED's / lights that are on the better for the battery, as its not being constantly run down.

As for the Random, its very difficult to get random, because as previously mentioned even random develops a pattern, because the software has to be told how to generate a random sequence.

Then it apparently sorts by the order fiels were copied to stick.

Regarding in car display, how come it shows temperature, but doesn't show clock ? I won't go into details about how much power car's LCD consumes..along with the clock circuitry..

And yes, random is indeed difficult to achieve, but it pretty much appears random in other car CD players I checked.
KIA's solution of always playing songs by the exact same pattern is nowhere near random. Not to mention that this pattern includes i.e. ~20 songs out of 120 that fit onto CD.

lol, maybe kia just think Random is the difference between the order of the files and missing one out every now and then!

and I know LCD uses a miniscule amount of power, but I agree, it is daft to only use the temperature, and not the clock, but then again (off the top of my head) I dont think anything displays on my dash / stereo at all when my car is off. I think its completely off, until I open the door and get a warning light appear!

The clock must still run in background. Not displaying the result is just weirdness and nothing to with drain.

It is very, very difficult to get a truly random seed for things like encryption or lottery draws because it is useless if future sequences can be predicted. It is very, very easy to use a clock based seed for shuffling music tracks because nobody cares if future sequences can be predicted; all that is needed is that each sequence is different.

yeah, I know that there was an issue on my Father In Laws Focus, where his LCD display was lit up, but there was just a small drain on the battery that flattened his car over a couple of weeks. Probably more of a bug with the car, than anything else, but I still struggle to see how an LCD screen using barely any power can drain a battery..

...Anyway please excuse my ignorance on the battery drain front. It was meant to be a somewhat sarcastic comment - I just forgot to include the evidence of sarcasm! lol

Unfortunately Random will always have a link, its just some manufacturers, figure out how to "randomize" a lot more tracks before they repeat themselves!

I can't say I've noticed this problem. I use the car every day and have had it (a 15 plate 4 Tech) for a few months now. I have 4GB of MP3s on a USB drive, which are in Artist and Album folders. I always switch on Random All at the start of every journey.

NOTE: Turning on Random ALL MUST be done EVERY time you turn the ignition on, as it defaults back to non-random when you turn the ignition off. Check that this isn't the cause of what you're seeing.

It's also quicker, if you're in Media mode, to hit the Voice Command button on the steering wheel and just say "Random All". If it worked, you'll notice the track changes.
