To start out, I know very little about cars aside from my old 82 Ford pickup that I've worked on a few times (and by worked on, I mean I changed the oil and brakes).

First off, I just hit 35000 mi in my 2002 Spectra, so I figured it was about time to change the air filter. I went down to the auto parts store, picked it up, and was horrified to open my hood and not see a nice little cylinder sitting on top of the engine with a wing nut on it!

Can anybody point to the stupid case for me?

Second question: Every time I want to turn on the defroster, the damnable A/C is automatically turned on. Is there a way to disable this?

Thanks in advance! :)

The defrost function uses A/C...The dehumidified air from the a/c system is what clears your windshield. All cars that have a/c utilize this for defrost. You can always press the a/c button while in defrost mode and it toggles the a/c off (and just lets regular vent air come through the windshield ducts).
