Broken AC??

Hey all...

My wife drives a 2003 sorento and last week the ac stopped working. Now before i start, i know alittle about cars. So if my terminology is off im sorry.

I thought the freon (134a) was low. Cause i do know if a system is low the compressor wont come on. So i hooked a bottle to recharge the system on the low port and saw the psi was at 150(in the red of my gauge) with the ac running.

So i looked at the electronic clutch and the middle hub wasnt spinning. So i checked the fuses and relay. I felt the relay kick in everytime my wife hit the ac button (i know that doesnt mean it works). However i did get a multimeter out and saw that there is 13VDC going out to the clutch. but it still isnt turning/engaging.

Well thats where im at. Does it mean i have a bad clutch (with me having voltage going to it)? Why is my pressure so high on the low side?

Any help would be APPRECIATED!!!!

First off make sure the ground is good. Its best to connect the meter to the ground wire instead of just touching it on something metal in the engine bay. If there is power and ground going into the clutch then I would say its bad, Although A/C is a weak point of mine.

Many systems work many diff ways. Since you know your way around a A/C manifold gauge set I ssume you as well undertand that you might have a HIGHSIDE pressure switch and a LOWSIDE pressure switch. IF the manifold setup is telling you 150psi then the LOWSIDE switch is seeing that too. And will never let the COMP engage. For safety reasons. With vech off can you turn the comp? So your sure it is not siezed? If it is not then deal with the rest. Like a blocked EVAP/COND/REC-DRIER/hose-line/Hvalve/orfice tube filter. On a 2003 (it is a 2003 after all) if the comp went MIA and blew junk into the system it might still turn. But has now ruined the rest of the system. If all looks fine then first thing is start form scratch. DEAD fill system, get rid of all R134a and go from there and fill. This might do two-three things.

1)Fix it once refilled again to correct levels with OIL!
2)Tell you that you were wrong and it was not LOW on R134a but overfull of it. Common for low side pressure to be high in that case.
3)While evacuating the system you get crap out the port you are useing or clogs it and then verifies that the COMP did indeed take a POWDER! and ruin the system.

Yes i can turn the compressor by hand. It does spin nice (not tight). Now the rest that you have wrote, can i do that? Now i dont have a "set" of gauges. I just have a refill bottle that hooks to my Low port and tells me the psi. Am i aloud to clear the system, do i have to clear both high and low sides?

Also can i "jump" one of the pressure switches to see if i have a problem on the low or high side?

From your text before I assumed you were not over your head. Now I tend to think if all you really have is just a refill bottle you are. What you are trying to do can not be done if you do not have a manifold gauge set. And going out and buying one now if you do not, is not an option as you will not know how to use them. SO do not. You are way over your head and must find a A/C shop (or someone with setup and has done A/C work on CARS) fast if you are planning on haveing A/C or gettin this fixed. It is now a SAFETY issue for me with you. AS a refill bottle is not really a good thing to have telling you that you have 150PSI on the LOW SIDE! R12 and R134a are flamable to some degree. And a blown up in your face bottle is not fun either. Thou they have a margin for safety built into them. REFILL bottles are not rated for 150PSI no sweat and a cake walk. Far from it as that is WHY they are told to be used on the LOW side only for refills, and you have been super lucky. Manifold sets have built in safety valves that pop off and stop nuke risk days. Since you do not have nor were useing one stop right where you are and walk away.

I bought a 134-a refill bottle with a built in gauge in it. On the directions it told BEFORE i screwed the bottle into it, to take a reading. That on the low side of the compressor that it should be 35-55psi at ambient temp. So i plugged the gauge/refill trigger and it pinned out. So i didnt do anything wrong other then take a reading. So i figured with it being "pinned" i should seek advise. Thankyou for the replys. I have come to the concluson to seek "professional" help. THANKS AGAIN!
