How many km does one have to travel before one can say the engine is fully broken in, 1,000km, 5,000km 10,000km?

I don't know if there is a recommended period, but my diesel XS started to run really sweetly, even the suspension seemed to soften to a really nice ride, after about 2500 miles.

I only took it easy with my Sorento for like 50 miles. I then said enough is enough. I drove it normally. It runs great 12,000 miles later.

I think it says in the Manual that for the first 1,500 KM (~1,000 miles) you should not rev the engine over 2,500 RPM.

The engine will “open up” at about 20,000 KM (~12,000 miles).

If you read car magazines and follow long-term car tests you will notice that 0-60 acceleration time improves as the car gain miles.

I drive an Isuzu Kb300 TDi intercoolled turbo diesel (sounds so cool to say that) ;) Mine was only really driven in properly at about 20000km. She is now on 66000km and she gets better all the time. I would say 2500km minimum to be safe. It will be beneficial to your engine in the long run to "baby" the engine as long as possible. I never used to go over 2600 rpm for the first 2500km. But I am talking about an Isuzu, I am going to buy a Sorento soon.
