My 2013 Sportage SX with a 2.0 (USA) has a black residue at the tailpipe openings. The car has 1100 miles on it and is mostly hi-way miles. In the "old days" it would indicate a rich mixture. Any ideas.

Thanks

In the "new days" it still means a rich mixture. Virtually all turbo engines are tuned rich, because the consequences or running lean under boost, is detonation, and an engine that self destructs. When the tailpipe is black, that's goodness. Just get used to cleaning it regularly.

Give it some time, too. It took 10K before my mileage reached it's maximum. Have you given it any full-throttle blasts yet? I haven't driven an SX yet and I bet it's awesome.

Hey "1saxman" it surprised me with its power and quickness. If your in the KC MO area come for a test ride.

Regards and Thanks

Thanks, and I'll keep that in mind if I ever get out there, but it's not likely. I definitely will be looking for a turbo on my next car, which should be a 2016. I'm trying to keep the mileage down on mine so it stays under full warranty coverage until I trade it. It all depends on what KIA and the others have to offer at the time. Who knows - with the mileage requirements that start in 2017, most cars might have small turbo engines by then, and hopefully KIA will have the tubo problems worked out.

I bet it has something to do with the corn-based Gasoline.
I agree, I am seeing this black gunk on the muffler tips now, than
ever before.

2011 SX - I also get a light black soot/residue in the tail pipe tips. As someone mentioned above, I have been told it's normal (for this turbo) and to just clean it when doing a car wash. Since the insides of the tail pipe tips are painted black it's hard to see the grime when dirty so at least that's not an issue ;-)

ps. Also, as someone stated, on a cold start every so often I can smell a hint of gas/oil. So, they must program it to run a bit rich as mentioned...

I would expect the black to get a little worse as Kia alters the map to compensate for the self destructing plug issue - I would guess there will be a future ecu flash as part of a regular service ... ;)

Actually that's normal for fuel injected vehicles.
I can't remember exactly, even water in your tail pipe is good.

What is NOT good IS BLACK SMOKE which is a sign of oil burning.
Don't worry, our Sportage is the same along with other fuel injected vehicles we had before

I thought the sign of a gasoline engine burning oil was blue smoke out of the tail pipe.

Black smoke is fuel(rich mixture)..Blue Smoke is oil...White smoke is water/antifreeze(Steam)
