Correct the unit could detect if the car was 'running' using the CAN bus, although the RIO AVN 2012 head does not have the CAN connected internally, components maybe fitted at a later date maybe as there are the footprints for them, the 2016 does of course have the CAN connected although this is the BODY CAN bus not the OBD or Power chain CAN bus - there is a bridge between both of them. I don't know what the gen 4 or K900 units are but I know definitely know that the Rio 2012 and Rio 2016 heads use Windows CE, besides being familiar with the software there is a nice sticker on the top indicating that - it would be interesting if KIA are using two different operating systems on their models though.
The GEN 4 AVN first came out in the 2014 Soul. They are used in the 2014-2017 Soul, 2015-2017 Optima, 2015-2017 Sedona, 2017 Sportage, 2017 Forte and 2016-2017 Sorento and run Android Gingerbread. The K900 uses a different head unit that is unique to that car. The Cadenza and Rio are still on the Gen 3 Win CE units. All the models with the Gen 4 AVN were the models that got the updates to Android Auto and Car Play.

When turning off the engine I often want to finish a phone call before exiting the vehicle, I've noticed the radio/ bluetooth turns off with out warning after a few minutes, is there a trick for this not to happen, I rather get a warning every 5 min than my important call be forwarded to my phone wich would be in my pocket

No, there is no way to stop that from happening. It is just a programmed delay of a few minutes. After turning the engine off you can hit the start button again with your foot off the brake and it will turn on accessory power and shouldn't interrupt the power to the radio. It will then remain on (with warnings) until you hit the start button twice to turn everything off.

Yes, there is. Simply hit the Start button one time with you foot off the brake. This will put the car in the Accessory position. After you are finished listening you simply push the Start button two times to take it back to OFF (it cycles from OFF, to ACC, then RUN, and back to OFF as you push the button with your foot off of the brake).

I had a 2015 Ford Fiesta before and I was able to charge my phone with the car off and no issues. Now, I have this new 2018 Kia Optima that tells me this warning about keeping the engine running to avoid battery discharge! So I am guessing its a bad idea to go the drive-in movies :/.... and charge the phone with the car is off.

Well, today my wife was driving home and the car completely shut off on her. Her troubleshooting was having to unplug the USB connection, and pretty much try to turn the car on again. It eventually worked after she was getting freaked out that nothing was working. In my mind, I think this discharge is affecting the electrical system and that is bad to new cars like these. Lots of the tech in these cars and anything electrical is a huge expense.

Nothing was noted on system check, and the car has nothing out of the ordinary.

If it comes up again, I'm throwing it up on youtube.

My wife and I have gone to the drive-in theater about every weekend during the summer for the past 3 years (2 years with the 2017 Sportage and part of this year with the 2020 Sportage) and yes, we got the warning but other than that the car started just fine at the end of the movie. Just to clarify this was at the conclusion of one movie, we have never stayed for the double feature so I don't know how well it would handle that amount of time. On really hot nights I have run the car throughout the movie while running the AC without doing much harm to my mpg.

If someone would attach an amp meter between the positive terminal of the battery and the positive battery cable with the engine off and the radio on, you would have your answer in 5 seconds.
