Hey everyone, I'm new here and this is my first post. I have a 2022 Kia Rio with the technology package. And I'm having bad gas mileage compared to the first month I've had it. The first month I was getting an average of 32-35 mpg, now I'm getting 22-27 avg. My driving has stayed the same, in fact I think I baby it more to see if I can save gas or get better gas mileage. The only thing I did purchase was a new K&N drop in OEM replacement filter.

I am thinking of replacing the filter back to the original and see if it helps. But I would like to stick with the KN filter for better air flow.

Is there a calibration or something I need to reset after I install the filter?

Does Anyone else have an issue like this, or had?

What was your fix?

Any help is appreciated.

How are you calculating it? By computer or by hand? The computer is typically in the ballpark for me but it's still off by varying degrees when I compare with calculating at the pump.

I'd say it's worth trying out the old filter for a tank and switching back to see if there's an obvious difference since I'm wondering if the increased airflow makes any difference for your car.

The OEM paper filter passes more than enough air, even partially fouled, more than the engine can ingest, so using a K&N for the purpose of "higher flow" is a misnomer.

I second the suggestion to do a trial with the original filter, and if that doesn't resolve it then you'll need to get it on a scanner and assess O2 and fuel trims etc.

So I do the math.

I go by my trip mileage ÷ Gallons to fill up = avg mpg

I need to put gas today, the gas light came on. I'll post my exact mileage later today.

And yes, I think I need to put the original filter back in.....for science. Lol

Yes it's the oiled drop in replacement filter.
Will definitely change the filter today......if I can find it. If not I'll go buy one.

Ok, so I just put gas. Here are the results.

Trip total 238.4 miles
Gas filled up 9.6 gallons
Average MPG 24.7

As you can see, the computer says otherwise.

They said that I could take it to them to do some kind of test. And if it fails then I don't have to pay anything. But if it passes then I have to pay.

So I'm going to change out the filter and run it for a full tank or two and see if it makes a difference.

Unless you are in truly awful stoplight-to-stoplight traffic, it shouldn't be as low as you're getting, especially with the CVT. According to the onboard computer, I got about 30 MPG on my city commute in DC, and that's on a 2019 with the old 6-speed automatic. My partner, however, only gets about 23 MPG on his shorter city commute, so it's not impossible!

My partner, however, only gets about 23 MPG on his shorter city commute, so it's not impossible!

I am traveling 90% highway. But there is construction. Regardless mileage should be in the 30s in city as per the sticker. And even higher on the hwy.

OK Here is the scoop..Your mileage is off because they are adding more alcohol to the gas...They were supposed to start the summer blend in gas which would have lowered the alcohol content but Washington is allowing them to run more alcohol year round..More alcohol less mileage per gallon..My 2022 Kia Rio S has the same problem..Try the no ethanol blend gas which is more expensive because it is pure gas no alcohol..I did and my mileage came right back...Damn Washington..!!!

They allowed E15 through the summer but it is still E10 at the typical gas station so it'll be the same as it would be as long as it still says up to 10%. We aren't supposed to run above E10 anyway, but of course that depends on the manual/vehicle. And if you go out of your way to find E15, the savings likely won't be worth it.

So, embarrassed to say but must admit. My dumb a$$ never checked the air intake filter. It's the original drop in air filter, I never changed it to a k&n drop in filter. I could have sworn that I did, I was like 99.9% I did. I do it to all my cars. First thing I do is cold air intake, muffler or full exhaust change. Why....idk.... because race car...right???...

Anyways, I had ordered the filter from the dealership. As soon as I get it I go to change it out in the dealership parking lot. I opened the air intake where the filter goes and I'm like.....wait....what?!? I take the filter back to the parts sales guy. Said I wanted to return it because that wasn't the issue. He laughed, I laughed in embarrassment and walked to service to schedule a test for the car that will determine what is actually going on with it. Guy who does the testing wasn't their to say if he would be able to this week so have to wait for a callback.

Last gas tank fill up was last week and my average MPG was 27 as per the on board computer. But my trip (9.7miles)avg mpg was 34.

My actual combined avg mpg was 24.6

Filled up with 9.6 gallons and the total mileage it gave me was 236.2 miles.

My tire pressure is at 33psi as per the recommendation on the label on the door.

Is there something that I'm missing?

What do you run your tire pressure at?
My oil is great and not needing to top off or anything like that. Seems like all the other fluids are good too.
