The average fuel economy automatic reset stopped working in our 2015 Sorento, I think after a battery power interrupt (new battery installed). I can manually reset using the RESET button on the steering wheel.

I thoroughly went through my manual, searched the internet, viewed Kia videos, and read Kia forums. I can’t find how to change User Settings of the LCD display. The manual states to "select the Auto Reset mode in the User Setting menu of the LCD display".

Everything I reviewed seems to indicate that you can only change User Settings with a Type B instrument cluster. My Sorento has the Type A. The thing that is puzzling is that I did have the Auto Reset mode since the car was new. So if it changed, you’d think there’d be away to select that mode.

Can anyone solve this mystery?

I have seen a couple of threads, where the owners brought the cars back to the dealer to fix incorrect settings that are not able to be changed on specific models. On my SX I do have the 'User Settings Screen' - settings - AVG Fuel ECO reset - Auto or Manual. A call to the service manager may answer if they can do this on your LX. Not sure why you lost the setting during a battery change as both the BCM and PCM normally keep these settings saved in non-volatile memory.

The average fuel economy automatic reset ....
Well..the book says auto reet occurs after refueling more than 6 litres...1.6 US gallons. .On my LX, I occasionally proceed a manual "reset" (using the steering buttons) just after a fillup.. I drove a Chevy product some time ago and it was written somewhere that the "average" fuel burn was based on the last 50 miles..or was it 50 km ??...anyway .....Kia says it calculates all from the last "reset".....seems auto reset is only with the "type B" LCD display...not the basic display as used with the LX. I am not aware that the LX has an auto reset...but I know there are some secret codes,,,not listed in the 2015 manual..to enable some functions. I learned on this forum that I could change the "all door unlock" with 1 or 2 strokes by playing with the remote buttons..there might be other secret codes.....

Mine auto resets the calculation automatically. I assume you'd need to run the tank down a ways. less than 3/4 on the gauge. My gauge is not near linear. Approach 1/4 mark I have half a tank of gas by volume. It so far off but the sensing works and distance trip need manual resetting is all.

If no joy. Call and pop into a dealer. Most simple things they won't charge for or show you if you ask.

Page 4-88 states that a power interruption will change the distance to empty function. I wonder if that’s a hint that it could effect other things.
Do you know if you have the option Type B LCD display?
I did contact the dealer, service writer not the manager. He said I’d have to bring the car in. I’ll do that with my next service, but I’d like to fix it myself if I can.

I actually have mine set to manual.. That way I get a multi refill average of what the PCM is guessing at for normal local driving. I hit reset prior to any long distance trips or mountain trips to the casino to compare the normal day driving against highway or mountain climbing results. I use the readings as relative to each other, I have never bothered to calculate real MPG using gallons and odometer numbers.

Yea, if I can’t figure it out, I’ll stop in to the dealer as they offered when they couldn't answer to the problem after my inquiry.

I don’t mind the manual reset; just want to understand what happened. And I like things to work.

It appears Type B only allows the user settings, but it used to work, so maybe your right about the secret codes to get it back.

Yes I do have type 'B' , distance to empty is calculated using fuel level and avg MPG number, maybe the engineers thought power off would effect avg MPG readings. I have disconnect my battery a few times playing with wiring, never saw the distance to empty change. I rarely look at avg MPG so I can't answer if power loss effects it. Had car over 3 years, MPG has been pretty stable for my driving conditions so now I only look occasionally to verify the car is running OK.

Update to the initial post:
I had the Sorento into the shop for an unrelated issue and had them check how to reestablish the auto reset for average fuel economy. After some back and forth, they eventually stated that the user manual is generic and they checked their manuals and that the Type A instrument cluster doesn't have an auto reset. I reminded them, again, that it worked for 6 years and appeared to stop working after a battery replacement. I asked if they have a tech line for KIA, and was told yes, via email, not a phone call. With repeated requests, they finally sent a message. I mentioned the possibility of secret codes. I'm waiting for a response.
I had called KIA customer support initially, and they told me I'd have to contact the dealer. Anyone know why the dealer doesn't seem to like contacting KIA Tech support for advice or answers?

I’m more persistent than that. Kia‘s tech support answer to the dealer was to review the owners manual. I think that is more a poor reflection on the dealer for not making it clear that was done and not pursuing a better answer. I called Kia customer support; gave them the case number I got from the dealer; and they stated they have no way of contacting teach support; they could only refer me to another dealer. so two action steps on my part: a customer support supervisor is to call me based on my request to escalate; and I contacted the dealer service writer to get the service managers name and number if they don’t give me tech contact info. More to come.

I’ll try that. Thanks. I’ll get back to you.
Wow! It is working after I cleared Trips A and B! How did you know or suspect that would work? I didn’t really understand your comment about another variation.
