I seldom use the manual shifter when driving but have found a weird nusiance that may be causing some loss of fuel when I used the manual shifter. When driving say, 20, 30, 40, or 50 mph and I shift over to manual shift the car finds the proper gear I should be in and I can use the manual shiftter. However when dring 55 - 70 mph and I shift to manual I find the vehicle in 5th gear, NOT 6th and have to shift manually to 6th which reduces the rpms; therefore, providing better fuel economy. Has anyone experienced this?

I have a 2011 sportage LX fwd 6spd auto and have noticed the same thing. When I shift it over to manual and up to 6 I noticed my revs do reduce slightly but I have also noticed that when I shift over the car seems to struggle a bit almost like the slightest hill and the revs increase. On a long trip I have made twice I have tried doing the whole thing in manual and the whole thing in auto and found somehow the gearbox is set up to use 5 more frequently and thus is achieves better gas mileage. I averaged a slight increase not much but not enough to have the hassle of watching what gear it is in.

It's an automatic gearbox. When you change to manual at highway speeds, it's probably programmed to grab 5th in preparation for passing etc.

Most autos are set up to only "lock" the gears when in auto; changing to manual will allow the torque converter to come into play. i.e. you are wasting your time if trying to get better fuel consumption by using manual.

Suggestions to get 32mpg promised, oh now 30mpg 2 months after purchase.

It's an automatic gearbox. When you change to manual at highway speeds, it's probably programmed to grab 5th in preparation for passing etc.

Most autos are set up to only "lock" the gears when in auto; changing to manual will allow the torque converter to come into play. i.e. you are wasting your time if trying to get better fuel consumption by using manual.

My 2012 Sportage LX FWD 6spd AT 2.4L getting 26mpg, all highway.

Does the exact same thing on a flat surface. I'll be doing 65, again on a flat surface, turning 2600 RPM's. Move it to the left and it is in 5th gear, move it to 6th and drops to 1900 RPM's.

Can't tell me you will get better milage turning at 600 more RPM's. Plus the wear put on the engine.

I have an appointment to have it looked at, as I suggest everyone should.
There is a problem when it shifts from 6th to 5th on a flat surface at 65mph, while in Auto D.

I see a recall coming, if more people are aware of their tach and gears that they are in. Take your car in, it is not right.......... Semper Fi

It's not clear whether you transmission was in 6th BEFORE you selected manual. If not, at what speed does it change to 6th in automatic mode?

When selecting manual mode, some cars will stay in whatever gear they happen to have engaged in automatic mode. Other "intelligent" transmissions will attempt to select the most approprite gear. e.g. Cruising at 100km/h (2000RPM), going manual, my Nissan will select 5th gear (2500 RPM), in readiness for overtaking. Downhill at the same speed with the brake gently applied, it will pick up 4th (3000 RPM) for engine braking. It's a CVT and the "gears" are fixed ratios.

The question is whether your car is attempting to do the latter, or if 5th is considered the appropriate gear for that particlar road speed. Economy is not directly related to engine speed, neither is engine wear.

LOOK AT YOUR TACH, THEN MOVE FROM D TO THE LEFT, RPM's STAY THE SAME. Whatever gear your in when in D, when you move it to the left ( shiftable ) that is the same gear you were in when it was in D. It doesn't change, until you shift up to 6th. Then your RPM's will drop.

Take it in to the dealership and get it documented now, you'll be glad you did. It will keep doing it and you're losing money, while taxing your engine at a higher RPM for no reason, other than bad engineering

If it NEVER changes to 6th in auto mode, then you have a problem. 1900 RPM at 65 MPH is fairly tall gearing for a 2.4 car; I'd press on and see when it changes to 6th.

Thanks everyone I have had some excellent feedback and do believe we will have an answer soon. I am just trying to obtain the best MPH I can get out of the vehicle hoping it does go into 6 gear when it is in automatic. I will try shifting over from full auto at different speeds and see it ever is in 6th gear. So I will start at 65,70, 75, 80, 85, and report back my findings. I have a funny feeling it will not go from full auto to manual and go into 6th gear but only by testing it will I determine that. When I orignially tried it and posted I was going around between 60 and 65mph when I shifted from full automatic tp manual/automatic and found the car kept going into 5th gear and not 6th.

Have you checked you car to determine if you go into 6th gear when converting from full automatic to manual/auto mode?
If it did go into 6th gear how fast were you going?

Some autos display what gear you are in, but most KIAs, not so helpfully, only tell you that you are in Drive. With a little research, you should be able to tell what gear you are in by looking at the tachometer. Alternatively, accelerate from a standing start and count the number of gear changes.

I have a 2014 Sportage and whenever I put the shifter into manual-mode, it keeps the gear that it was in before I put it into manual-mode. If I drive economically and not be going up a hill in auto-mode, the transmission can get into 6th gear around 45mph. One thing I noticed in auto-mode is that once you start going up a hill, the transmission will shift down without you changing the gas pedal position. This is most likely done so that you do not lose speed.
