Does anyone happen to know what would cause my automatic rear door to not open or close fully in either direction? It seems as though the motor is burning out or something of the sort.

Motors are probably working fine (one each side), but circuit detects too much current being drawn - taking too much effort if you will - to open / close. The motors current limit when not yet opened/closed and believe they've hit an obstruction (like your head!) and then either reverse or stop (it stops if the current in the reverse direction is equally excessive, rather than just cycling back and forth) so as not to cause any harm. You'll want to identify what's binding up, get that resolved, and reset the open position per the manual. This is covered in your owner's manual. Look for the pages related to the liftgate, specifically for "Automatic reversal" and "How to reset the power liftgate".

He could test closing by hand. But expect he's done that and not driven with it open. If there is a hard to move point in the travel. Check the hinged area up top that nothings got in there somehow and in the way.

If the restriction is more or less even across the entire arc of the hatch, he wouldn't know that it's close to or at the limit all the way through. Back-driving the motors produces an inaccurate sense of resistance. Only if there were particularly bad 'spots' would a hand test reveal anything.
