[AU] Kia Carnival Platinum MY17 - Dead Head Unit

Hi guys

Just thought I'd share some more recent issues with the head unit in my Kia Carnival Platinum MY17, I've never been completely happy with it, lots of bugs in the software and finally and unexpectedly it recently just gave up the ghost completely.

Here's a video of the brick I now have sitting in my dash, well, sometimes it's a light up brick I guess but that just makes it hard to focus on the road when driving at night!
Dead Head Unit

After a visit to the dealership and many conversations with Kia Australia they're going to replace it ... when stock becomes available and they haven't given me any timeframe about that at all.

FYI, in Australia at least, the pre-facelift YP model head units were made by Motrex, not Kia themselves. Through a friend who used to work at Kia Australia, they had lots of problems with Motrex sourced head units and that's why the facelifted YP got a Kia made head unit instead, the one with CarPlay and Android Auto.

I have asked and have pushed, but don't like my chances, to get one of the later head units as I've already had my head unit replaced once before and have been in at least 5 times due to problems with the head unit, some were fixed and some I just resigned myself to live with.

Has anyone else had their 2015+ Kia Carnival Platinum head units replaced?

That’s not good with the head units failing consistently. It has been 3months and still waiting for a replacement unit.

I am having the exact same issues with my 2016 Kia carnival platinum. Have been waiting for a replacement head unit since Sept 2022. Still no word on ETA. I have also had both sliding doors fixed and waiting on the left side to be fixed for the second time. I have emailed and had replies every second week trying to get an ETA with no luck. Seems to be the same everywhere. Is that email address mentioned earlier in the thread the only way of contacting Motrex??
Thought I’d try and buy a 2020 Carplay unit direct from Motrex. Let’s just say customer service may not be their strongest point 😂

I am seeking a replacement head unit for my 2017 (2018 year model) Kia Carnival YP Platinum. I understand there is a 2020 model which is compatible which has Apple CarPlay - something which Kia told me would be available as an upgrade when I purchased. Apparently this was not true. I’ve had the head unit replaced under warranty previously and I currently have intermittent issues with the unit. Kia’s warranty support has been less than perfect and I’m now just looking at purchasing a unit.

Please can you advise availability and cost. I don’t have the exact model number but I understand it is a 2020 head unit which provides Apple CarPlay and maintains the 360 degree camera function etc. I note it loses CD player but I can’t remember the last time I played one, so that’s fine.

Based on all information & service history, we’ll send replacement unit accordingly.
-If we think NON CD unit is necessary, we’ll suggest this unit to dealer.
-Otherwise we’ll send genuine CD player unit.

Ive been told by Mildura Kia that I should go and buy an aftermarket product. My 7 year warranty is finished and my current head unit was replaced more than 12 months ago so that isn't covered either. Disappointing to see such a lack of consistency among Kia dealers on this stuff.

it's a really good question. I was told that I would be able to get one where the existing cameras would plug and play, but I just assumed I will never be able to see my climate control settings ever again.

I know you can get them which will display it - there are a few on Aliexpress - but I can’t get an answer about the cameras. I’m accepting I will need to pay for a unit if it will give me CarPlay. I just don’t know what the options are
This has just happened to my 2017 SLi, just a black screen now. Really miss the reversing camera. I don't like the thought of it taking months to get repaired, and being out of official warranty.

First the screen died, a couple of months later I had the unit replaced. The replacement worked for 12 months before the touchscreen failed, without touch input you can never agree to the conditions when you start the car to use the unit. At least my phone was still paired, the radio was still tuned and the reversing camera could be seen.

Now, I have had the unit replaced for a second time under warranty and this time they replaced it with the newer model. It's all working well so far, I hope it is all good from here. It does look like an improvement as long it is reliable.
