[AU] Kia Carnival Platinum MY17 - Dead Head Unit

Hi guys

Just thought I'd share some more recent issues with the head unit in my Kia Carnival Platinum MY17, I've never been completely happy with it, lots of bugs in the software and finally and unexpectedly it recently just gave up the ghost completely.

Here's a video of the brick I now have sitting in my dash, well, sometimes it's a light up brick I guess but that just makes it hard to focus on the road when driving at night!
Dead Head Unit

After a visit to the dealership and many conversations with Kia Australia they're going to replace it ... when stock becomes available and they haven't given me any timeframe about that at all.

FYI, in Australia at least, the pre-facelift YP model head units were made by Motrex, not Kia themselves. Through a friend who used to work at Kia Australia, they had lots of problems with Motrex sourced head units and that's why the facelifted YP got a Kia made head unit instead, the one with CarPlay and Android Auto.

I have asked and have pushed, but don't like my chances, to get one of the later head units as I've already had my head unit replaced once before and have been in at least 5 times due to problems with the head unit, some were fixed and some I just resigned myself to live with.

Has anyone else had their 2015+ Kia Carnival Platinum head units replaced?

@Bigsul it's a bit of a waiting game. I think global supply issues have resulted in low stock of replacement units. The only advice I can offer is to keep following up with them. Kia Cardiff was able to keep me in the loop even saying that "it's been ordered" or we're waiting to hear back by such a date. I put that date in as a reminder and called back to follow up. But if supply is an issue, there's little Kia can do to except wait for a unit to be allocated to them for your repair.
I'm on my third unit (all under warranty) and it was replaced close to my 7 year warranty expiring. When they replaced my unit the third time I asked them If this unit goes bad like the previous 2 did and my car is outside the 7 year warranty what happens? I was told that the replacement unit comes with its own warranty and if it fails within that timeframe it will be covered. Though I forget what that period was. Maybe 12months? Which puts yours outside that window if it is 😬

This is good to know because less than a month after it was replaced, it also showed the symptoms of freezing, unresponsiveness, and solid yellow colours instead of the reverse camera picture the last 2 units also exhibited.

It's due for a service soon, and I'll raise it with them again and see how we go.

Overall I will say I love the Carnival. We've done a few trips to QLD and back in the last month and it's such a comfortable cruiser and very good fuel economy to boot. Easily did 800kms on a tank (7.5-8L/100kms) with a full car.

Long overdue update:
Refurb head unit has an intermittent freezing issue where the touch screen is unresponsive, or at best it lags significantly. Difficult to replicate, but I took a video of it happening and booked in with Kia at Kingswood again.

Got a call this morning that Motorex agreed to send out a new head unit with Android Auto/Apple Car Play, have booked it in this Saturday for replacement.

That's a great outcome!

Mine's booked in at the end of this month for its next service. I sincerely hope Motrex agree to do the same for mine since I'm currently on unit number three for my Carnival.

Yeah that's ridiculous, surely you've played the game long enough to prove (not that they don't already know) the unit is a dud.

Waiting for mine to be replaced too. If this one plays up again, I might be looking at aftermarket. Has anyone had any good experience with particular brands?
Hi all, am glad I found this forum. Our reverse camera failed 2017 SLI MY18. I took it to Col Crawford in North Narrabeen. They told me it was out of warranty and charged me $187 for the diagnostic. They then told me it would be a further $1100 for a refurbished unit. I was totally unaware the 7 year warranty didn’t cover this. It sounds like on this forum people have been getting their head units replaced for free even though they are beyond the 3 years. Is that correct? Btw up until today we have had really good service from Col Crawford. Today was really poor - guy serving couldn’t care less.
WOW, seem to be a known issue, mine recently died after 2 weeks from a Service and recall on signalling issue.
Ring Kia Blackburn Vic. and I have to wait for a booking of Diagnostic Analysis (7/11/2022, yep apparently next available time) which they're planning to charge be est. $176.
I told them it should be under the 7yrs Warranty.
Thanks for the info members

It sounds like it's completely dead. if not, make sure you record video and take photos of it playing up to show/give to them.
Common problems with the early YP models. Head unit, power doors and left CV are ongoing problems before the face lift. KIA is aware of the issue but chose to brush them off. Is anyone interested in class action? There are 4 law firms in Australia doing class actions. If we get enough people, they will consider acting for us. They are doing "No win - no fee". Please feel free to share your thoughts.

I took Kia Chadstone and Kia Australia to VCAT for not providing me a replacement unit back in March 2021. The reason I went to VCAT is because I waited for 3 months with no line of sight of when the new unit will be fitted. Once I filed the case against the 2 entities, they finally started to "talk" to me and the new unit was installed after waiting for 4.5mths.

In VCAT we settled for a small compensation. Both Kia Australia and Kia Chadstone apologised for their poor customer support and care. I agree that class action should be taken as 5 of my friends and relatives who own Kia Carnival had to go through a similar experience like mine, this is not a one off thing, nor accidental and therefore the public should know and Kia should compensate it customers accordingly.
This is an ongoing proplem. Headunit bricked itself in a couple of year after replacement. KIA is well aware the issue but decided to drag it on until we are out of warranty. The more of us get involved, the stronger the case will be. It is a matter of how many are willing to go with us. Minimum of 7 is needed to get Slater & Gordon to consider acting for us. I hope more owners are aware of this post and get this going as soon as possible. Some of us is out of warranty or not much warranty left. KIA needS to provide a legit solution, not just bandaids. Also compensate for the time and inconvenience caused imo.
Has anyone here also have their left CV joint and/or power sliding door rotor fixed?
OK, good news post today. This week my 3rd unit was replaced with the updated Apple Carplay unit. There was some initial confusion when I reported the same problems in the 'new' 3rd unit. Kia was under the impression I wanted it repaired. As in taken out, opened up, fixed, and put back together repaired. While telling me that this wasn't possible it became clear that no I didn't want it repaired. I wanted it replaced with the later model from 2019. A little while later Kia called to say that Motrex said there was no later model for 2019 and had pushed back on the request, but then mentioned there was a 2020 later model that could work.🙄... YES I want that model. Whatever model it is that came after the problem-plagued model is the right one. Just please don't give me a 4th 'like for like' replacement 😀

Kia then proceeded down that route and after calling to confirm that my existing unit was navigation compatible put the order in and then it was just a waiting game until it had been shipped to Kia Cardiff. At this point, I was happy to wait in the knowledge that it will be replaced with the CarPlay model and hopefully resolve the freezing and block yellow camera view issues I'd been experiencing.

Last week got the call my unit had arrived and got it booked in early this week to be updated. Once it was done I'm happy to report that my Kia Carnival UP now has CarPlay and everything is working well. 360 cameras, radio, and navigation. All functioning 100%. The unit feels more responsive and definitely more modern in its UI. I suspect it has a higher resolution display as well as being physically larger too.

So yeah, a good news story. Took some twists and turns but got there in the end. The cherry on top was that while doing the display unit they also fixed my leaking washer fluid pump under warranty due to it being a known issue. Happy with that, as I was expecting to pay since my car is out of the 7-year warranty as of Feb/March this year.

When they gave me my 3rd unit just a month before I was out of the 7-year warranty I queried what would happen if that replacement failed, would they fix it under warranty again? They said that the new unit would come with its own warranty so if it failed it would be covered. And it was. That 3rd replacement unit exhibited the same symptoms (freezing locking up, block yellow camera feed) as the 2nd unit within a month of it being replaced. And just this week I was given the later model head unit (the CarPlay/Android Auto one) under warranty (see post above)
I have a my17 platinum and the head unit has just died. Blank screen, no 360 cam, no audio etc. I have booked in for initial diagnosis and warranty claim but was wondering if anyone else has been through this and managed to get the newer motrex head unit with apple car play as a replacement. . If so how did you go about requesting? Thanks in advance.

Hi Wazza. I requested through the service department at the dealer. Reported the issues (mine were intermittent) with photos/videos of the described behaviour. There was some initial back and forth due to miscommunication on a couple of things. Firstly, the service department and thus Motrex thought I wanted my faulty unit repaired (as in take out, open up, fix, put back together, repaired). Once I realised that's what they thought I wanted I said no I didn't want it repaired. I want it replaced with the CarPlay unit from 2019. Well that led to more delays because when the dealer requested the CarPlay unit from 2019 Motrex came back and said, can't do. It's impossible. There is no unit that meets that criteria. Then right at the bottom mentioned that there was a 2020 CarPlay unit that could be done.... Dealer and I both said YES, that one, replace it with that! And they did 👍🏻

So probably the key takeaway is to ask it be replaced with a CarPlay model from 2020 onwards. And be prepared to wait, mine took over a month but some of that time was due to miscommunication re: repair vs replace and 2019 vs 2020

Good luck!

Anyone still waiting for head unit to be replaced.
I own a Kia Cerato and head unit is dead. Heard from Kia they ran out of stock and will notify once stock is back(no ETA). No good at all been waiting for 2+ months now.
We own a Platinum MY16 and have had many issues with the head unit. Initially they "updated" the software and later when it died they tried not to replace it as they said the head unit only had a 3 year warranty. However they relented and replaced the head unit 17 months ago with the same CD version. Unfortunately this has now died again and the car is now out of its 7 year warranty. As the head unit is only 17 months old we are still trying to get it replaced but KIA is doing what it can for it not to be replaced at their cost. We will go to NCAT soon if they don't come to the party
I’m waiting for a few months now.
‘15 Carnival on my fourth head unit. The dealer said Kia will replace it on good will meaning, ‘off warranty’.
But it’ll likely fail again. We’ll see I guess.
