Anyone with standard key contacted by Kia to install new immobilizer patch?

Has anyone with a standard key been contacted by Kia yet to schedule the install of the new engine immobilizer security patch?

I asked my dealer about it during my last oil change, and the svc. mgr. said that they're already processing them. Affected owners are supposed to receive a letter, which means then to schedule your update.

Thanks,

I got my update done this morning. My center screen also froze when I checked before leaving the dealership. I asked them to reset the battery, and it went away.
I also tested starting the car after unlocking with the key instead of the remote and the car started fine.
What doesn't make sense to me is if I sit in the car, lock the car with the remote and turn the key, the car would still start. Shouldn't the car be "immobilized" until it receives the unlock signal?
And here's what the window decals on driver and passenger windows look like. Kind of hard to see, especially on a tinted window.
Thanks for showing your decals. Kia dealer didn't give me those and I can't get a straight answer out of them about it.

I believe there’s a 30(?) second countdown before the starter-kill goes into effect.

Yep, that's what it was. After 30 seconds, as soon as the key is inserted into ignition switch, the alarm goes off and the starter is disabled.
I thought the alarm duration was increased from 30 seconds to a minute, but it still timed out after 30 seconds.

Well - I received my letter a few weeks ago, but since I have remote start on my '16, they can't apply the patch due to a 'glitch' that Kia's working on. I read that supposedly it was only going to take a few weeks to come up with that someone at Kia said to a journalist. The support site is only showing my VIN as not yet having the patch installed, and not much else useful info.

So - has anyone heard or read anything about the glitch being fixed for remote start owners yet?

Thanks,

That's ridiculous of Hyundai/Kia to do that for two reasons:
1. I've see video where thieves got it started in under 30 seconds.
2. A starter kill is worthless once the engine is started.

The immobilizer should be immediate and it should disconnect the ignition and/or fuel pump.

I go in next week to the dealer to have mine done, I have no faith in the software patch and will continue to use my steering wheel lock and pulling the fuel pump fuse if I have to use public parking for an extended time.

At least when I sell my Sorento this recall won't show up as needed to be done.

I heard zip, is your remote start factory? If it’s aftermarket I bet you could add a starter kill/lower cost security kit pretty easily since they’re sometimes pretty modular.

My remote start is the factory one.

Here's what Kia says about these in their letter:

"Kia Amendments to Eligible Customers
Vehicles Equipped with a Remote Start Accessory
To address recent social media “challenges” encouraging young people to break-in and steal certain Kia vehicles with steel key and “turn-to-start” ignition systems, Kia recently sent you a letter advising that we have developed a software upgrade that can be installed on your vehicle free of charge to restrict operation of the vehicle’s ignition system should your locked vehicle be the subject of a break-in and theft attempt without the key.

Since the launch of this software upgrade, Kia has identified a compatibility issue involving vehicles equipped with a remote start accessory which results in the activation of the burglar alarm when the remote start is used. Therefore, we would like to delay installation of the software upgrade until we can investigate and address this compatibility issue. Of course, affected customers may choose to proceed with the software upgrade despite this issue with the remote start accessory.

We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to providing you with an update regarding this issue in the near future. If you have any questions, you may contact the Kia Customer Care Team online at kia.com (Owners>Contact Us) or via phone at 800.333.4Kia (4542)."

Apparently there are a number of state attorneys generals who are not satisfied with this fix and are demanding damages from Hyundai/Kia. Not sure how that would work since ignition immobilizers are not a required feature on cars like emission and safety controls. Trying to get the nerve up to take ours in and get it done, just fearful of something happening down the road (like locking out a legitimate attempt to start the car!).
One with think that production of NA vehicles would be unified and the same for this continent.
EG emission for US and Canada is California base level same., DRL in Canada, but not USA, Immobilizer fuel control Canada

Is there more. I know US vehicles to be register for Canadian use have to have mods made. DRL is one of them and for many is a software toggle or firmware change in the ECU.
Had my software update done today. The service writer had me sign waivers because I have an aftermarket (Compustar) remote start & alarm. After a 2 1/2 hour wait the service writer got me from the waiting room and said the update killed the remote start. I told him maybe not, since before dropping the car off I put the remote start/alarm in Valet Mode, which shuts down the alarm and remote start. I exited Valet Mode, got out of the car, and hit the remote start button. Car started right up. When I got home I shut off the car with the drivers window open, got out and locked the doors/turned on the alarm with the Compustar remote. I reached in the window and manually unlocked the door, then opened it. The alarm sounded. I ran several errands this evening and everything seems to be working fine.
As for the window decals...I stopped while still on dealer property to read through the service report. The mechanic stated how he "made sure door glass is completely in the up position. Using masking tape adhered the template sheet to the outside of the right passenger door. Placed sticker carefully without touching adhesive. Confirmed that the decal is perfectly aligned in the template box. Pushed out any air bubbles. Repeated all the steps on the other side." I'm glad I read all the care and effort he put into it, because otherwise I was about to go back in for a new set of decals because they are so crooked. That's the kind of thing that really bugs me, but in this case it's a moot point because i had my front seat windows tinted to match the back seat ones and you can't see the stickers, which are mounted on the inside, from the outside anyway.
Also while I was there they performed Open Recall SC249B Tow Hitch Harness. The service writer told me that that consisted of installing a 15A fuse. I asked him what was the size of the fuse they replaced. He shuffled through the paper work and said, "Um, 15 amp." So I'll sleep better tonight knowing that was done.

Yeah I searched and missed this thread. Yes I have messaged KIA and it's crickets. My dlr Galeana is the worst fraud, I'd rather leave it running in the street than deal with them. I'm sure I'm the only one.
From what we've heard, the sticker is probably at least as effective as the firmware update.
:p
Got brave enough today to call to make the appointment to get this done. Was told by the service writer to hold up as they had gotten back door word that Hyundai/Kia was rewriting this. Now, he may have just been talking about the remote start accessory but thought it was more of an overall change to make the theft deterrent more of an actual deterrent. Since I also have to have them look at my trailer hitch and verify it isn't a Kia product so they can close that recall as well. Guess I'll just wait.

It is easier to use "Google" for the search and skip the Vertical Scope search engine in this forum. Be sure to add "Kia forum" to whatever you are searching for and you will get a more complete list.
I hear if the doors are not open and the thief brakes a rear window and crawls through the update wont work

I don't know about hot wiring, but when I tested with the key, starter kill does kick in.

Supposedly though, with the patch installed, it's the unlock of the doors with a FOB that enables the car to start.

The smash-and-crawl method, and then start with USB/screwdriver or even a key (w/o hitting unlock on FOB) isn't supposed to work! shrug
