AEB/ABS Emergency Hard Brake issues anyone?

533 Views 25 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  WetSandyPants
I bought a 23 X Line premium pkg with 15k miles on 2-1-23. 2x in a month I've had the scary as hell Emergency Hard Brake issues! It has been with the dealer on 3 trips & they held for a week but couldnt duplicate it so nothing happened. Surely I can't be the only owner scared to drive their kia because of this? Trying to find out what others are doing before it happens a third time!

So the brake pedal goes randomly "Hard" when you try to press it? of something else?

Normally the brake pedal becoming hard to press is the result of a bad brake booster or vacuum line leak.

Hopefully you get it sorted, if you have your phone make a video of it next time it happens

My guess is that his car will sense a non-existing obstacle and perform an emergency braking.
Perhaps there is something in front of the sensor or water in the connections? Maybe the classic issue of soft-connect?
As far as the actual brakes go, the most common issue has been soft brakes. My guess would be the master booster

Ah that kind of automated assisted "emergency braking".

Makes me think about the Driver Attention Warning System!

No, it just HAPPENS with a visual on the dash, audible sound and the car SLAMS THE BRAKES BY ITSELF.

Hahaha 'if you have your phone make a video of it next time it happens' - that would require a gopro running everytime i get in the car

'something' is right! Unless the dealer can duplicate, they can't fix. Car is cleaned weekly & I wipe front & back everytime before I drive

couldnt be further off course

Ok but with the IDA alerts happen its what your describing with a sound and sometime steering and brake corrections in conjunction with the other assist functions.

You can test it out by setting to low or off and seeing if your ghost braking reappears
Thanks, but I HAVE NO IDEA what you're talking about here. Def NOT an IDA issue because my hand was on the wheel in 50mph traffic both times. No cruise, No IDA, NADA. Ran through a corporate LEGAL escalation review for 2 weeks & they just said No deal, No buyback, No access to the review. nothing. POS KIA company
It does sound like a critical safety issue though ... The only thing that I could suggest is to check the connection to the camera near the mirror and make sure it's tight

Where do you get a schematic to show this connection?
Actually, now that I think of it, I am not sure if it's the camera or the front sensors that activates the emergency braking. You can take down the giant plastic panel around the rearview mirror and check the cables to the camera and also the sensor connections at the bumpers for the proximity sensors.
If the emergency braking only activated in rain/snow weather, there might be a water leaking into a connector somewhere.

I think one of the members here had a link to the tech manual? but you'll have to pay for the access though.
I think it may rely more on the front radar built into the grill/bumper. Would suck if it didn't work in the fog...

Don't bother messing with the mirror console!

WSP - You gotta find a better dealer to service your car - ASAP!
Yeah now that we have more details on when and how it happens:

When your cruising along on the highway you get random phantom braking without applying the brakes?

What is this about traffic your referring to ? If your going 50mph on the highway, your not sitting in traffic so the traffic is ahead of you or what exactly?

Either case one or more of the sensors, cameras, or safety assist function is malfunctioning? IDA doesn't sound likely so would move on to the others.

I would have your dealer check and run diagnose all the KIA driver assist tech: the forward Collison assist, Lane Departure & lane keeping assist, Safe Exit Warning & Highway Driving Assist, Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist , and the others. ABS only happens when you apply the brakes so that doesn't seem likely given your case

Hope you get in sorted, we're all trying to give you some things to look at
Yep driving along and SCREECH! Fortunately had a friend with me the 1st time as a witness. I really think kia is giving me the runaround. Surely I can't be the ONLY owner this has happened to. Taking it to an independent mechanic next week

If its simply a bad part, then yes, you could be the only one its happened to. But this forum represents a very small sample size. We had a bad part in our Tucson PHEV and the symptoms were sensor errors in the driver's door. (Anyone else experienced this?) Apparently, KIA/Hyundai service MO for fixing anything non-obvious in these cars, is to get on the phone w/KIA tech support and rely on them to suggest parts to be swapped out.

Turned out to be a bad ABS brake controller. It takes input signals from the drivers door (and only the drivers door), so that it knows to lock up the brakes when the drivers door is opened and the tranny isn't in Park. Took an experienced tech at the dealer to scope the data signals coming in and out of the ABS controller to figure this out. These (really all new) cars are rolling, complicated computers. You need to find a dealer with experienced techs that can debug computers, not just change the oil and swap parts.

Sounds like it could be similar? Did they check the ABS controller?...

They could probably start debugging signals there and work their way back to the forward collision sensor to see where the data is getting lost in translation. Good luck!

Yes, 1st time with a friend doing 50 with cars all around and the 2nd time was accelerating out of a stoplight. Some suggested the driver's side blind spot but IDK it all happens so fast & scary AF!

Thanks but how do you 'get' the dealer to DO anything you want? They do everything they want in accordance with Kia or they don't get paid and I'm not paying. Meanwhile they burn up my fuel and mileage. This dealer told me a week ago he would call me when he has a loaner vehicle for me since Kia will no longer reimburse for rentals. I cannot understand how this is legal. Doing a little research yesterday looks like my case may be open to Florida's Lemon Law after Kia Consumer affairs ran an escalated 2-week review (which they refused to let me have a copy of) and told me the Lemon Law in Florida doesn't apply to 2nd+ owners.

Why WOULD Kia do anything for me? They just shelled out 220million to the victims of the TikTok challenge.
If you call the KIA customer support line and get a case opened for you, that will light a bit of a fire under the service dept (they also compensated us for the car payment we made while it was in the shop). My dealer started out just following tech support’s advice, but when I told them I was going to try a different dealer, they pulled their best tech from other cars and had him work on it. I don’t think they were going to be paid if I pulled the car…
