My 2020 Sportage 19,000 kilometers, When braking at slow speed in snow especially, the drivers side front wheel seems to grab and lock up when applying just a little extra pressure on brake peddle. It is alarming loud, sounds like a gear with broken teeth suddenly engaging locking the wheel and grinding as you slide. automatic reaction, remove foot from the vibrating peddle. The noise it makes sounds damaging . I took it to the dealer and was told it was the ABS and that was normal. Your opinions are much appreciated, thanks

Yes the ABS makes a loud grinding sound, along with some feedback through the brake pedal. It will happen when the car senses that one or more wheels are locking up due to loss of traction. This is not damaging at all, and just means you are stopping too hard for the level of traction you have. Consider slowing down a bit and braking easier in winter conditions.
Pretty much how every ABS system I've ever used works and sounds.
You will hear a similar sound when driving through deep snow without braking as well, though it may be less noticeable, which is the AWD system working.
