2023 Sportage Hybrid -shift/transmission lag

Hey everyone!

Received my 2023 Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige on June 19. Had to put an order in about a month earlier so didn’t take too long to arrive. Also got it at MSRP which was nice. Swapped my 2019 Honda Insight for it.
Anyway, just seeing if anyone else has had the issue of an almost lag, or pause of the shifting/transmission when pulling away from a stop?
It happens randomly and usually only like once a drive, usually in the beginning.
Scenario:
I leave my house in electric, the engine kicks on at some point…I have a stop sign not far from where I park so I’ll come to it, slow down…and if I don’t come to a complete stop and try to press the gas then after breaking…it feel like it doesn’t know what to do….the electric motor nor the gas engine engages for like a second or two before it is like…OH YEAH I’m supposed to be going! And it almost lurches a bit to make up the delay since…by this point…I’m pressing harder on the gas to actually move!

again, it only happens at those moments of almost stopping but not really but I’m concerned it will do it while trying to merge on a highway or something. Seems very dangerous.

I have an appointment this week to have the emissions done and to fix a squeak with a handle so I’m going to inquire and have them drive it. Could be a software update or something.
Just coming from my Honda and it’s CVT, the electric motor would always engage to get the car going and it never did anything like that. But maybe I’m just not used to driving a car with gears anymore…hah.
Anyway, thanks for any insight anyone!

Besides that, car is awesome. Looks cool. So much tech. Comfortable. Etc etc.

Thanks!

It's more like... almost to a stop, push down the throttle, and it takes about 2-3 seconds before it decides it wants to respond to the input. I've been in that situation a few times, and it can be quite unnerving.
I have experienced the exact same thing multiple times when not quite fully coming to a stop and then attempting to accelerate again. If I come to a complete stop it is much better.... but there are cases where this can be a surprise (pulling into driveway and waiting for garage to open, yield sign, entering a busy roundabout, slow stop and go traffic, etc) where a complete stop isn't always going to happen. This is not the same as the Auto Hold feature or anything with the Turbo (engine isn't even running) as others suggested above.

What it feels like to me is happening is that the electric motor is being used to help brake the vehicle for regeneration to charge the battery, but it doesn't switch back to having the electric motor power the vehicle quickly enough, it is still trying to regen even though your foot is no longer on the brake pedal. When you do come to a complete stop it seems to leave the regen right away and switches over to being ready to power the vehicle even before you lift off the brake (you can slightly tell when it switches over) so it is ready. My other vehicle is a Chevy Volt, and this equivalent scenario feels much more natural how it switches between regenerating with the electric motor vs powering the car with it, and it happens immediately.

So far (1600 miles in 2 months) this is the main downside I have seen to the Sportage Hybrid (this and the loud reverse sound) otherwise I love it. I was hoping this was something they could fix with an update, but not sure. In some ways it is nice to know it isn't just me, since I don't think I will even ask the dealer to look at the concern.

I'm not sure if it can be disabled, but regen braking is an important way that any Hybrid can charge the battery... so I am not sure I would even want to.

The paddle shifter in the Sportage is tied to the Automatic transmission to change gears. Here is the section from the manual:

I'm thinking when the PHEV is running HEV how big of deal this would be. I'm worried about yields, roundabouts, etc.
In my experience, this only happens when the vehicle is almost at a stop. In most cases it isn't an issue if you are going through the yield or roundabout at 10-20 mph (a more typical speed) anyway... it only happens when you actually need to yield to another vehicle and slow down to less than ~3 mph and then accelerate again without a complete stop. It will also happen to anyone at a stop sign that doesn't actually come to a complete stop.
