2023 Kia Sportage Recommendations/Complaints

Hello everyone,

I just have a few complaints or recommendations for Kia and the 2023 Sportage. I currently own the X-Line trim and maybe I am missing something in regard to the functionality of the vehicle but these are a couple things that I noticed that seem unchangeable.

1. That you have to go to the convenience settings on the infotainment system to view your oil percentage. Why is this not a thing when scrolling through the cluster? It's such a simple option to add in and even my bottom trim Chevy Equinox had it. Maybe this is an option on a higher trim, but it's hard to believe that it would take a higher trim to add that to the cluster just to be able to scroll through quick and check it. I am also aware that it will alert me, but sometimes it's nice to be able to check once you start getting below 20%.

2. The second thing is that whenever you leave the car on to go into a gas station for example, it does the beep to let you know that you left it on and walked away with your keys, but it won't let you lock the vehicle with your key or the lock button on the doors armrest. This is very annoying when it's freezing outside and you want to keep your car warm without having to shut it off, get out of the vehicle, lock it, and start it again. Not a huge problem just annoying that it's not possible to lock once you've left the vehicle.

Like I said these are things that I find a little annoying with the vehicle that you would think would be a functionality in a 2023 model year. If I am missing something and there is a way to fix these things please let me know because I can't find a way.

Also, not sure on Kia's capabilities on what they can update aside from the infotainment system in a vehicle, but it would be great addition for them to add an update to put the oil percentage on the cluster.

Each manufacturer does things a bit differently. Top trim gauge cluster here and it’s not there. I agree it would be more convenient to have the percentage in the gauge cluster but let’s be real…how often do you really need to see that? Regarding your second point, I’m fairly certain the engine is supposed to be off while refueling.
You could always remote start it after you get out.:)
It's been about 5 weeks since we've had this car now.

Things I do like about the vehicle:
  • the user profile switching is fairly good and easy to switch in/out from. it changes the instrument cluster the way i want it, the music i'm listening to, the seat setting vs how my wife wants it.
  • ventilated seats... where have you been all my life? i haven't used this in the summer yet, but Texas' weather is like a roller coaster in winter/spring. It's sub-zero one week and then hot the next. the ventilated seats have been nice in those hot days this winter.
  • the homelink mirror is real nice. all other vehicles with homelink I've had required a fairly hard push, but on this vehicle, a light press is all that's required.
  • this synthetic leather is much nicer than i thought it'd be. it's real soft and plush.
  • i normally don't like wood trims, but this one is real nice. it blends with the interior nicely rather than popping out.
  • i thought it's real cool that you can use the app to see screenshots of the surrounding of your vehicle.

Things I don't like about the vehicle:
  • the part where after you turn on the car and select your user profile, the screen takes you to the default screen rather than the menu screen or the last screen you were using when you turned the vehicle off. always got to swipe and select.
  • the part where your side mirrors are not part of your user profile memory, only the seats
  • why can't I see a tachometer on my instrument cluster outside of being in sport mode?
  • I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate not having actual buttons for the climate control. But even the climate control screen options could be more user-friendly.
  • the key fob is giant and heavy! at least it's all keyless entry and keyless start.
  • the piano black everywhere. it's a fingerprint magnet. I don't mind it so much on dash trims and such where fingers rarely get near, but things like the door trims or the center console trims... please no. had to get one of those stick on covers so I don't have to deal with fingerprints anymore.
  • the rear. why does the plastic part go up so high in the rear?

Also, I really like the custom buttons on the steering wheel (star / mode), but I wish you could select it to do other things than the ones just in the options. In my other car, we have customizable buttons too, but you can select it to be anything rather than just a small list of things. If I wanted it to be my TPMS, a specific radio station or specific song off my USB, navi to home (or wherever destination), or even to just turn the screen off, I could.

To the second point, yeah I always have my vehicles off when refueling but I meant more along the lines of going in to use the bathroom or get a coffee. You would think if you leave your vehicle on and get out and it clearly makes the beeping noise that your keys are no longer in your car, then you could lock it and leave it running to keep it warm without needing to push start it after you get out.

I agree with a lot of your statements and I'm sure many people would. To the last paragraph, I also like the custom buttons and completely agree that there should be more functionality or options to choose where it takes you. There are a few ways I would've like to be able to program it but can't.
gmhl10 where did you get your center console cover from? Ebay seems to be the quickest with delivery by March 10th for $42. Saw some cheaper but delivery time can go into April. Never mind I found the thread, good deal for you. I just went ahead and ordered them from ebay.

I haven't noticed this by using CarPlay w/wireless dongle. Jumps right into Waze on the screen maybe 10-15 sec. after I get into car and continues playing my last media selection (currently XM satellite). No need to really mess with the screen at all. And can ask Siri via steering wheel button to, "Use Waze to navigate to Work". Fantastic! I also have the Star button on center console programmed to CarPlay, so can get back to that screen at any time.

I could swear that there was a setting to add the tach to at least one other mode - Smart? Try that.

Can you elaborate on what you're talking about here? When you say "app," are you talking about the Kia Connect app or the actual backup camera on the car itself?

It plays the music right away after I select the profile, but I just want it to go to my media screen, which it does not.

As for the tach, I just looked and there's a setting where you can add tach to any of the modes. I either missed this the first time going through it or it was added on later. Either way, YAY!

The 360 camera thing is only on the Prestige models btw

Can somebody describe how this works? You can only take a picture now or can you scroll back and see footage? Can someone post a picture of the phot it takes?

Yea, so once you press that "Take 360 Image" button, it'll send a request to the vehicle. About 15-20 seconds later, you get the images.
It'll start with a top down view, then let you look around front/back/left/right. Here's a few samples (without the car's location shown) I just took.

@gmhl10 That kind of cool; didn't know that feature was there. It would be nice if it took a picture if the car was bumped or someone got close... Video would be better. I've wondered if there was a way to tap into all the cameras and record the footage automatically 24/7 on a loop.

I didn't know about it either. It's definitely cool, but still a wasted opportunity. Clearly the technology is there to allow you to view past history, but you can only take a "current" screen shot? It could be incredibly useful, but because of the limitation, not likely to be helpful. If somebody hits my car I won't have a shot of it at all unless I know they hit it and happen to request a picture and they still stay there after hitting my car. Kind of a waste of what could be really awesome.
It really would be nice to offer some kind of blackbox/dashcam feature for even subscription basis.

I thought the Korean version does this. They come with a USB port in the glovebox for exactly that purpose, as I understand it. No clue why they don't do this because I would pay quite a bit for that.

Yeah, better than any 2 channel or even 3 channel dash cams, the hardware is already there too. I really don't know the reason

Probably not allowed here because some US privacy laws/rules. All the technology is already there; just give us a way to tap into it (privacy could be handled by on/off switch or not plugging in SD card)

Teslas have this exact functionality as I understand it, so it can't be law related.
