2022 Kia Sorento X-Line S - Squeaking Noise in Steering Wheel

Hey all! I'm curious if anyone has had a similar issue with their 2022 Sorento (or any other KIa for that matter). I am noticing that when I drive the car for a long period of time, there's a squeaking noise in the steering wheel when I am keeping the car steady. When I fully turn the car, no noise - only when I am keeping the vehicle straight.

I took the car into the dealership last week, and they said they updated the Power Steering settings in the computer of the car, but still having some trouble. Curious to see if this has happened with anyone else, and if so what was the fix? The car is still brand new (just over 1k miles).

Thank you in advance!

Does it sound like a rodent? Seriously? I have had this happen a couple times and I can’t figure out what causes it. It seems to definitely be coming from underneath the steering column and, like you, it’s not just when I’m turning. Freaked me out one morning on the way to work - it really sounded like a rodent in the works.

I cannot replicate it - it has happened twice - 2022 PHEV with 6,500 miles.

That is so funnny as on my 2022 PHEV I was ready to get a can of rodent spray out or was expecting a rat to jump out from behind the steering wheel. I feel beter now that I was not going crazy :)

It does! I’ve noticed the squeaking noise comes and goes, and definitely gets worse the longer I am driving the car. Usually takes about 25 minutes for me to get to work, and starts squeaking within about 10 minutes of my drive. Luckily, I got a video of it this time around so hopefully that'll help the mechanic with diagnosing the issue.

Hello,

We got the 2022 PHEV a few months ago and we are having this exact squeak issue with our steering. The dealer thought we are crazy. It's hard to replicate and it's unpredictable . We had a theory it happens most in cold weather, but that may not be the case. Like you and others have said it seems to happen most with small movements of the wheel. It's so frustrating. We also had an external door handle break. I'm worried about the quality on these.... I'm taking the vehicle in to get the handle fixed this week and am going to bring up the squeak again. I'm printing off this thread and we got it on video too.

I notice it does happen more frequently in colder temperatures as well - glad to know I'm not the only one! We took it for a drive a few days ago when it was in the single digits and noticed the squeaking was pretty prominent then. The past two days it's been near the 30s and the car doesn't squeak hardly at all.

Joining the squeaky 2022 Sorento club. I have had mine two months and it’s a horrible inconsistent tortured mouse squeak. The squeak is coming from the far left side on the driver side. It only happens when car is moving. It’s random, and of course didn’t do it for the KIA technician yesterday. They said nothing was wrong with the vehicle. It’s still squeaking. I’m going to try to record it next time. I hate driving this vehicle, when it’s screaming at me. I’m in the Midwest and we have had a variety of temperatures. My Sorento squeaks in any temperature, rain, snow or sunshine. Any help figuring what’s causing this, is greatly appreciated.
Joining the discussion. I have had my 2022 KIA Sorento X Line for only 2 months. The horrible tortured mouse squeaking is random. No particular weather condition initiates this noise. It varies from mild to very loud. It seems to be coming from the lower far left on the driver side. I took it to the dealership. They said everything was fine. It still squeaks. This is very scary, especially if it does have anything to do with the steering. I travel major interstates. I can't lose my steering. I'm going to record this noise, because it didn't do it for the KIA technician. Any help, is greatly appreciate. I really don't like driving this vehicle, not knowing what the issue is.

Yes, same thing here. It drives me crazy when I do 200-300 KMs run. The dealer is aware of the issue, but can only act if I bring it in when it’s making the noise, fools.
If you want you can stop on the side, and do a couple of full left right rotation back and forth, this will stop it for a while...

I'll try that next time it happens. My dealership said the same thing, they would need to witness the squeak themselves, even though I sent them the recording. This is random, so they would almost need to have my vehicle for at least a week, driving it everyday. That would be fine, but they refuse to give me a loaner. I did report this to KIA Customer Service, so now I have a Case Number. I hope everyone experiencing this, reports it to KIA. They won't investigate this, if only one person is complaining about this issue.

OMG this is happening to mine as well. Got the car three months ago and it just started to make that noise. Have it recorded and will have to start keeping record of when it happens.

I got my 2022 Kia Sorento SX in January this year, and I've had the same problem. I took it to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic test or something on it and found out that the squeaking indicated that I needed a new steering column.. Luckily I'm covered by my warranty and don't have to pay anything. Getting it fixed on Tuesday.. I hope this possibly helps.

Following this! Had my first one driving back from LA. Super annoying!.
Please let us know more - I’m curious what type of tests they ran. I haven’t heard my little rodent friend for a few weeks.

So my Kia dealership fixed the annoying squeaking problem. They had to replace the steering column, and It's been about a week now and I've had no squeaking problems. I just know that they ran a diagnostic test when I took the car in back in mid February I believe and they found out the problem was the steering column. They had to order it cause its a special part, and when it finally came in they replaced it. It was covered by warranty so I didn't have to pay a ridiculous amount of money. I'm just happy that the squeaking is over.. so annoying..

Was it the entire steering column or just one part of it? Did you have a claim number?

They replaced the whole steering column at the Kia dealership service department.
Wow, i thought i would be the only one! i just purchased my 22 Sorento X-Line S and noticed a squeaking/rattling sound from the driver side. I feel it mostly comes from the left small speaker. I recently had a dash cam installed and thought maybe there was a loose wire rattling somewhere but good to know its just a Kia issue.

I just drove a 800 mile round trip to Sequoia national park and that squeaking noise was the most annoying thing ever. I feel the sound was stronger when i would go over bumpy/uneven roads. i will try to record it later on today. I hope i can get this issue fixed soon!

I wouldn't call them fools. Noise issues are hard to diagnose, and they'd really be fools to replace a part based on a customer's report alone.

Here is a video of the squeaking. It for sure is coming from the steering wheel/gauge cluster area.
