Hey guys, new to this forum and new to Kia ownership - so please forgive me if this is something thats been covered frequently before.
To get to the point, I recently purchased a new Kia Cerato GT hatch - I've only put approx 600km on it so far, absolutely loving it..
However.. I've noticed since day 1 there has been a persistent "buzzing" "Winding" like vibration sound coming around 1500rpm to 3000, that is especially noticeable when driving slowly, giving it a little or using gears to slow the car.
I'm almost certain it isn't the fake induction sound as the volume doesn't get any louder or softer when changing between normal and sports, however it does sound like it's coming from the rear of the engine bay/behind the dash somewhere.. and when I open my windows or rev the car in park I can't hear it.
(Also note it isn't noticeable outside of the car, at least to my ears - I've not had someone else drive it)
My question is, does anyone else know anything about such a sound? Is this just a common noise the 1.6 turbo makes, or could it be a more serious problem?
Hi James. I bought mine in June and am having exactly the same problem. Tynan Kirrawee said it is normal and is coming from the High Pressure Fuel Pump. I find this hard to believe as my daughter has the same model without issue. Were you able to get a diagnosis on yours and if so, has it been fixed?
Hi Glenn,
Funny you mention Tynan Kirrawee, as this is also where mine was purchased from in August.
I took mine in to their service centre for the 3k check-up a few weeks back and was told it was normal also.
I still really dislike it, I'm constantly hearing it or listening for it (although it's hard to miss) and it's completely turned me off the car.
Despite that, I am learning to live with it - I figure it's got 7 yrs warranty, and given my line of work and current financial situation the car is here to stay. What can you do?
Question, Have you been running 98 in yours? Does your daughter run 98 in hers?
I've always run 98 in my cars, but now I'm wondering if running 91 (as the manual states) would change anything.
I hear you James. It's disappointing as I love everything else about the car. The power. The handling. Such a fun car to drive. I find myself playing music with the sunroof open so that i don't notice it. I actually bought mine from Peter Warren as they messed me around at Tynan. Also the guy gave me a fleet buyer's discount as I'm a school teacher - something Tynan never offered me. Ended up paying $35400 instead of $37500.
I actually use 95 RON, not 98. My daughter uses normal 91 unleaded. She's picking me up tomorrow to do some shopping at Miranda so I'll have another listen to hers. She has the 2019 model. I find it strange though that the only mention of the buzzing on any forum or review is yours. If it was actually a normal sound then wouldn't there be more people posting about it as it's quite obvious. Anyone who gets into my car notices it but noone else who owns one mentions it at all. Or are we the only ones with decent hearing?
Hi James. I have had a few drives in my daughter's car and it does buzz but not as loudly. I've done a lot of research on the web and though I haven't found anything specific to the Cerato GT, I have found a number of mentions of the same problem in other cars. It keeps coming back as the High Pressure Fuel Pump - being most notable at start-up and then pretty much going away once the car is warmed up. Seems to be an inherent problem with all HPFP's. I found this clip on Youtube which discusses the use of rubber isolators to quieten the noise. Not sure if the same technique can be used on the Cerato but worth a look. Check it out at 1min30secs. I'm going to have a chat with my eldest son who's a motor mechanic by trade and see. There are also sleeves apparently that can be used to dampen the noise. I took mine for a drive around the National Park a couple of times over the last few days (such a fun drive in sports mode) and can't say that I noticed the buzzing much at all. Maybe it's settling down? Maybe it's the fact that I've used Shell 95 the last 2 fills? Who knows? But Kia is never going to say that it is anything other than normal. Test driving one at the dealership is certainly a good idea though. Let me know how you go James.
Tynan's are useless, I ended up taking mine to the KIa at Bankstown which is more like Revesby for service etc, They are much more helpful and useful than any experience i had with Tynan's.
So did you also have a buzzing in your GT? Were they able to rectify it over at Bankstown or at least offer suggestions on how to quieten down the problem?
