My struts "work" but they're weak and often will not lift without my help giving a slight lift. There may be a related issue in that it sounds like peeling Velcro when it first comes loose. I've sprayed the mating surfaces of the gate and the rubber gasket with silicone but that doesn't seem to help. After the first lift of the day or trip, it may lift on it's own afterwards but not always, Dealer agrees it needs new struts and he'll be glad to do it for $1500. This just after $1100 to replace and program the body control module which kept the shift-lock button from working. I drove/shifted it with a long screwdriver down into the console for nearly a year before biting the bullet on that one last week.
My son and I found replacement struts for about $300 each and figure we should be able to replace ourselves. Problem is the wire goes inside the frame through a rubber grommet. We can pull the grommet out easy enough but the wire continues inside and we don't see the plug portion. We assume we'll have to get into the headliner above the liftgate but not sure what that will entail since it seems to be one huge section.
Has anyone done this themselves? Do the new struts come with any English instructions?
Thanks everyone -- I've loved this Sorento other than these current issues - really the first major $$$ in 91K miles.
