2016 Sedona reliability over time....?

I have a 2016 Sedona LX with 40,000 miles... I was just curious how reliable this vehicle will be over time. When I purchased it back in 2019, consumer reports had it rated as 'extremely reliable'. Now they have it rated as 'average' for reliability and they claim that the 2016 can have major engine/transmission problems. Feel free to let me know what your experience has been if you own a 2016. Thanks everyone!

PS: we got a great deal when we bought and it... and my wife loves it!

I've had my '16 Sedona SX since new and I currently have about 95K miles. It's been trouble-free. I had the sliding door motors replaced under warranty at 60K (does the LX have power sliding doors?).

I've not had any issues with engine or transmission. I've towed my utility trailer (sometimes loaded to around 3500 lbs), I've lugged the wife & 4 kids, packed in 8 adults on one occasion, I've loaded it up with lumber from Lowes, I've moved friends and relatives, and it's handled everything just fine.

Early on I had a rough idle issue. My local mechanic said to run a can of seafoam & a tank of premium, and that cleared it up. Now I occasionally run a tank of premium (usually when towing) and haven't had the rough idle come back.

I switched to synthetic oil somewhere along the way, and got the tranny fluid replaced a time or two, and have had no issues.

I've been very happy with mine.

2015 SX. 60k miles. Door motors and exactly one broken seat bolt comprise the entirety of issues.

Oh, snap! I forgot: One of my headlights went out this week, and I think there's some water in one of my backup-light assemblies, so, there's that. Plus, the new-car smell faded this year :(, I'm pretty ticked about that. Luckily she still looks brand spankin' new.

I've had my 2016 since new (50.5 K current), both door motors replaced under warranty at 45k, both rear tail lights replaced under warranty (collecting water) was back at 10K and just recently had washer pump replaced under warranty. All fixed without any back and forth at dealership. Huntington Kia in Long Island is great shop.

Engine, Transmission, electronics all good, just have a rattle from 2nd row seats I can't chase down.

I am dealing with excess water collecting on mine, second owner at 105k miles. seems to have just started, the left one was half way up into the turn signal.

to add to the discussion as well, reliability issues I have had none. the OE battery crapped out this week at about 6 years old ('15 build year) the second row dome lights quit early last year then the one over the cargo quit later last year (replaced bulbs, no dice) the left power mirror doesnt fold any more, just hangs up half way in. the first iol change I did I noticed some oil wetting behind the engine coming from just below the head, I suspect the oil pressure sender from seeing it on another post, I will order it when I get ready for a tune up, likely sooner than later, starting to notice a slight mis fire on cold start.

I’ve got about 60k on the clock. Just replaced front lower control arms under warranty because of a front suspension rattle. The new LCAs didn’t fix it. I also have a second row passenger side rattle. Seems like the seat is loose but I haven’t done anything about it.

No engine or tranny issues yet. Nothing else done outside of routine maintenance. Oil changes at 3,750 miles or so per the extreme maintenance schedule.

I'm back. I throw in Techron or Liqui Moly Jetron at every oil change for the injectors. Use BP gas mainly. No oil catch can. Run Berryman Induction cleaner every 30,000 mi. At 7500mi the Pennzoil Ultimate comes out dark amber, not even black. Use good synthetic oil and 7500 mi is perfect.

Sounds like it had a hard life
The rear light housings are easy swap out and you can find after market replacements on eBay.
6 years on OE battery is a great run for the money, batteries last between 4 - 5 years with typical use pending environment (super hot/cold), I replaced mine at 4 years to avoid waiting for failure.
As far as electrical gremlins it could all go back to water in tail lights if if is up to bulb housings you could be shorting things out, also check for blown fuses.
Yours is first report of leaks I've come across but this link ( Third generation YP (2014-2021) ) to repair guide should walk you through any repairs.

The lights going out started well before the condensation ever appeared in the lights. I've been trying to set some time to get at the diag on the interior lights. I haven't even looked to see if each light has it's own fuse (doubtful, as the right side went before the left side did on that center row and the override button above the driver still works as intended) Thanks for the link, I am going to dig through it

Hi Vanman, Im also considering changing my battery... I had two failures on another car and think changing my alternator was also due to having dead battery at times.

I have a 2017, barely 40k miles. I guess Im also due to change
Buy a cheap battery tester and check it. As long as the CCA is at least 70% you're good. I changed out the battery on my 2015 as a PM. CCA were down to 50% even though it started fine every time. $200 at Autozone for another 850CCA for the SX with electric steering. The battery will never crap out on you in your driveway. It'll always happen in the middle of stickville with no indication of it going bad.

All good here. I have a '17 LX that I bought in '18 with 20K miles. I now have 58K and not one issue. I did upgrade the wheels to OEM Telluride 20' ones and new Michlins to tighten up the ride and make it look a little nicer. Just keep up with your service intervals and you should be good. I may overdo it a little, but I change the oil ever 5K miles with full synthetic, but I'm sure that can be stretched with no worries.

Bought our '16 SX new in May 2016. Currently has 89,000 miles. Waiting for the sliding door motor replacements as we speak. Had to replace the muffler at 63,000 miles. Developed a rust hole and started sounding like a motorcycle. About to take it in for its fourth set of front brake pads, three on the rear. On our third set of tires. Absolutely chews through tires and brakes. Thinking the rear suspension is starting to go now. But that's to be expected at this mileage. Had the DVD player replaced under warranty at 25,000 miles too. Paint is chipping off on the hood and doors now too. So I think average reliability is appropriate for our vehicle.

My old 2012 went thru tires like crazy due to rear alignment issues that my local kia dealer couldn't get right nor many shops by me I finally found a mom and pop garage that finally got it right. So far my 2021 been ok I rotated the tires 3 times already as it has 15k in less than 6 months. Sorry to see so many issues with yours hope it gets sorted out. [emoji106]

Just had my A/C compressor replaced, Got it done under extended warranty @ 99,989 miles. $0.00 out of pocket. Would have been a $1,200-1,400 if I had to pay.
It had leakage between high & low sides. At idle low-side pressure would start climbing and it would stop cooling. Get moving and it builds enough pressure to start cooling again.

Now it works great!

I just replaced the original battery at 48,000 miles, 50 months, since new purchase. Noticed slow cranking 2 days ago, and on the return trip after about 90 mins parking the starter barely turned over and the engine just about fired up thankfully. Drove the 12 miles home with no problems. Checked voltage with engine running, was 14+ meaning alternator was OK. Shut down engine and voltage rapidly dropped to 10.5. Disconnected (-) cable and put in on charger for a few hours. Back up to 12.8. Left it disconnected overnight, dropped back down to 10.4. Not holding charge, time for new one. Started right up, no problems so far with electronic systems. All radio presets and phone call history were somehow saved, which I didn't expect. In-dash clock did go to 1:00. I have changed batteries on many vehicles over the years and all of them lost the radio and clock settings. Four years is reasonable for a battery especially in this hot climate.

The only trouble I have had with this vehicle is with the Kumho tires. I have had tread separation on two of them. The first was at 28,000 and 25 months while on a vacation road trip. Took it in to a KIA dealer in Colorado. They replaced it with a Pirelli and I was able to get a 100% refund of the Kumho price from Kumho (which was less than the cost of the Pirelli.) The 2nd was at 45,000 miles. This was replaced at Discount Tire with the same model Kumho, with some credit for remaining tread life, but I was not able to get anything from Kumho this time.

I am not sure if the other two original Kumho tires will do the same. I am planning to trade this in later this year for a newer model, so I hope I don't need to replace those tires before that.

Follow-up on the tire situation. In October I noticed a vibration on my rear tires where the remaining two original ones were located. I took it in to DIscount Tire to get a balance done, but they refused to put the tires back on saying they were separated and dangerous. So I had to get two new ones as replacements, and Discount gave me a good amount of credit for the remaining tread life again.
I had planned to trade the van in for a new model but have not been able to find one that I like due to the tremendous shortage of new cars in general. So it looks like I will be keeping it for a while longer. It is still running well at 52,000.

I really appreciate the replies on this thread... So far the 2016 Sedona that I have has been tremendous. I now have about 47000 miles on it & it runs great. And I will probably be changing out the original tires for some New Ones from Costco this summer. I am hoping that with regular maintenance I can make it to about 150 or 200K. Thanks again everyone. I will periodically check on this thread :)

yeah I also like the carnival, we went to see a 2021, and it was 45K vs our 2017 33K, higher interest, and they offered us under 20K for our van (could likely be sold 19K easily in the current market... even my 2011 corolla was almost selling for 8K last year with the hikes in price). We'd have ended up with payments 40% higher for 5 more years and it wasnt the 3.5L carnival either, just a 8speed sedona with a square fuel door instead of round (upgrading from the 6 spd).

Hello my 2016 has been great cept for a couple of things. 1) did not even get 30K on my original Hankook's, supposedly rated for 60K and chalked up to alignment issues and was really not aware of this condition nor was I advised when I took it in for maintenance and 2) the battery is an issue as I find if it is not driven for about 5 days my battery will be somehow (reason not found) depleted and won't start so my work around there is a battery tender. 30,184 miles as of right now.

I have a '17 we bought used with 94k on it, but we were able to get a full maintenance log from the previous owner that I am continuing on. It's been nothing but regular maintenance for the most part (oil, filters, etc), transmission fluid was changed at 70k. There are a few odd entries in this log, apparently the fuel system was cleaned at 21k and I don't know the extent of what they did (some seafoam or something more extensive?), and it has "body lubricated" a few times, which I assume it talking about the sliding doors and stuff but I am not sure. I took it to the dealership to do an oil change and we replaced the windshield washer pump because it had cracked and was leaking. The next oil change will put us in line with the recommended service internals from Kia so I'll follow that until/unless something pops up. We only put TopTier gas in it unless we are traveling and don't know where to find it, but that is only once or twice a year. Runs great, rides smooth, fits our family well. We've loved having a Kia so much I am thinking about selling my Ford Escape to go buy a 2020 Sorento that has a pretty good price on it at the dealership.

I'm not too surprised at the fuel system cleaning. Mine started stumbling on idle. After talking to a car dealer friend, he advised just running a can of seafoam and a tank of premium. It cleared right up. It still happens on rare occasions, so I just run a can of seafoam through it and everything's good.
