I’ve owned this car since 2016, bought it new at the dealership. Has run great, never had any issues and have kept up with regular maintenance.

I moved to a very rural area in 2023 and in October of that year, a mouse got into the engine.

the mouse chewed on the ignition coil harness so I went ahead and replaced that myself because the price I was quoted was over $1k.

after that initial repair, the car ran great for a few weeks, then I got a misfire code in cylinder 3. I initially checked the coils and they were fine so I got a new spark plug.

Car ran great for a few months after that and then I got another misfire code for cylinder 1 & 3. Check the ignition coils and they’re fine so this time I changed all of the spark plugs.

Car ran great for about a month and then I had to misfire codes and each time I have a misfire code there is a miss or sputter while driving and a loss of power while accelerating.

This time I changed out all the ignition coils and all of the spark plugs. And the car ran great for about two months.

so you’re seeing a pattern here. Based on the codes, this is everything that I ever replaced since Oct. 2023:

all Ignition coils 2x
All spark plugs 3x
All fuel injectors 1x
Temperature coolant sensor 1x
MAP sensor 1x
Intake valves cleaned 2x

No matter what I do, I keep getting a misfire and cylinder three. I’ve taken it to two garages for diagnostics and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it.

I can’t afford to sell or trade in this car, but I also can’t afford to keep dumping money into replacing parts.

I’m desperate for help!

RockAuto is a reliable source, but would not buy plugs or coils from Amazon or eBay - too many counterfeits on those sites and NGK's are their favorite.

Based on what you're reporting I doubt the capabilities of the garage's that you've been using - the "compression was good" doesn't tell us much (wet and dry numbers?) and it doesn't sound like they don't have the experience to do a leak-down test.

There is a garage that I’ve gone to before that has certified mechanics & high tech equipment. I hesitate to go there because I was recently laid off & it’s expensive. Plus, I don’t know if the car would even make the 50mile trip.

I do have AAA, so I could have the car towed there if need be.

Do you think it’s worth replacing the coils & plugs again but with OEM this time or should i save the money & take it to the expensive garage.

You have a mouse infestation, and that has caused the electrical gremlins.
DO NOT throw any more parts at it on guesses. you now need a diagnostician with skill and scope..

My suggestions, save money for professional help, or start learning how to diagnose and acquire some advanced tools..

Continue to run with miss fire will eventually destroy the CAT as a minimum..

As you live in PA, look up Ivan at Pine Hollow diagnostics, in State College, PA

I do have a lot of voles & mice running around in our garden/yard. I used to feed the birds, but not anymore!

Over the weekend I set some bait stations all around our house and garage. Then I set some snap traps inside our garage. I also used some VoleX in the garden.

I’m not a total novice when it comes to cars, my dad was a mechanic his whole life and taught me a good bit, but that was on the older stuff.

I decided to get the leak down test at a garage 5miles from me. I’ve used the this place a few times for alignments/tire changes/inspections. I dropped the car off yesterday and the owner called today and said he did a leak down test and compression.

I don’t have the test results in front of me, I’ll have those tomorrow when I pick up the car. He did say that the compression test showed cylinder #1 at 20psi.

I told him I’d like to talk to him in more detail tomorrow when I stop in.

I’m only an hour from state college, but I’m afraid to drive it that far for fear of making this problem worse. Ugh.

I believe that! I vacuumed the engine and used a mirror to look for more damage but never found any. I felt all of the hoses as well, nothing.
I then set a mouse trap on the engine and caught a baby mouse the next day.

You posted that you replaced ALL fuel injectors.

How is your engine doing on oil consumption?
KIA 4 cyl engines at that time and later used lots of oil at 50K+ I have a 2017 4 CYL 2.4L that used so much oil that KIA gave me a new free engine.

Right before I got that new engine, I started to get misfires on CYL 2. Maybe oil ruined the fuel injector
MISFIRES can RUIN the CAT converter too. Unburned gas messes it up.
