Hey everyone,

I bought a 2016 Kia Optima SX Turbo about a year and a half ago and it’s been and absolute pleasure.
The other day when driving a few hours out of the city, the car went into limp mode and stopped giving me power only to result in a pulsing engine and knocking sound in the engine. The car has since been towed to Kia and waiting for a full diagnosis but after reading some reviews it seems like this 2.0 turbo GDI engine might need to be rebuilt or replaced. It’s been serviced regularly every few months so this is a huge shock to me.
It’s just about to hit the 6 year mark at 85,000km, so it’s just out of the warranty according to Kia. Looking to see if others have been stuck with this same issue, having to pay large sums of money out of pocket to get the car road ready.

Here in the US, the past decade (roughly) of 2.4L and 2.0L-T engines have a lifetime warranty after a lawsuit for grenading in that fashion.

There was also a lawsuit in Canada, but the website seems to be down. Some details are here:

I believe as long as the KSDS recall/ECU update was done you should be covered since it seems Canada also has a warranty extension. If it seems similar to the US lawsuit then I would worry more about how long it's downtime will be.

Hey sorry for not getting back here. I ended up getting the entire engine swapped out from Kia.
The process was a bit tedious: first I had to take the vehicle in and pay for a diagnosis ~$160 and they determined that broken components were in the engine. They sent out a request to Kia Canada to have the engine covered although it was outside the warranty period. After 5 weeks or so they got back to me and approved the request. It took a couple weeks to repair from there. They tagged on a recommendation to change transmissions fluid that I had to pay ~$300 for but well worth it. They didn’t cover any of my rental car expense, stating it was standard processing time and that components to repair the engine were not on back order. Had to drive it nice for the first few thousand like a new engine normally would. No issues since getting it back on the road and putting about 6,000km (3,700 miles) on it.

You were fortunate to have one of the Settlement engines. But you are entitled to compensation for loaner vehicle(s) during the dealer wait-time.

I would demand that from Kia Inc, provided you have receipts for any rentals. You may need proof that the dealership refused you any rental coverage. When they told you No,..... you should have gotten that refusal in writing.
