Am I the only one who doesn't think there is really anything "spy" about this? More like "teaser shots".

I see some subtle differences. Looks like a bigger window in the very back. The hood appears to kind of wrap down along the side a bit.

Not as much a change as I expected if this is really the '14 model. Not that it's a bad thing.

The 2014 Soul is looking really nice to me as a possible replacement for my 2009 Rondo. With a wider body (2.4" wider rear hatch opening), longer wheelbase (now more rear leg room than my Rondo), lowered hip height, and 24.2 cu ft of cargo space in the rear (vs 19 in the outgoing model), the 2014 is shaping up nicely.

Should be a bit quieter as well, due to the extra sound deadening:
"Liberal use of expansion foam (replacing the previously used block foam) thoroughly fills body cavities, reducing outside wind and road noise. A reinforced isolation pad in the cargo area and poly-urethane-layered carpet helps reduce overall interior noise levels by approximately 3 decibels."

This is what really caught my attention:
"Significant attention has been focused on improving the all-new Soul's ride and handling through heavily revised front and rear suspension set ups. The front subframe utilizes four bushings (none are used on the current Soul) to reduce ride harshness and impact booms over rough pavement. The stabilizer bar has been moved rearward on the McPherson strut front suspension, while the steering box has been moved forward, lending better balance and subsequently improved handling."

"Both engines have been tuned to provide more low-end torque (nine percent more torque at 1,500 rpm on the 2.0-liter; five percent more on 1.6-liter) for an improved around-town driving experience. "

With the changes to the engines and handling, it could definitely be nice. Hopefully, it won't increase the curb weight too much, as I liked the ~2778lb curb weight on the outgoing 2.0L with the auto.

Any ideas on whether the ground clearance on the 2014 Soul stays the same? Also, what about interior cabin volume?
not all figures are provided at this time, don't have curb weights for example, don't know the new ground clearance - the 2013 was 6.5"; interior passenger volume is 101.1 cu. ft. down slightly from the current 102.3 cu. ft.

the Track'ster was used as a reference for many parts of the new Soul as can be easily seen.

What's under the skin on the 2014 Soul

  • 2.4” wider opening of the lift gate
  • will be available in 7 new exterior hues including the two at NY Solar yellow and Inferno Red
  • ideas taken from the Track'ster – large trapezoidal lower air intake and fog light location and the and the “floating” body color panel inset into the lift gate and also lifting as many of the Track'ster's circular interior reference points as possible
  • liberal use of expansion foam thoroughly fills body cavities, reducing outside wind and road noise
  • reinforced isolation pad in the cargo area and poly-urethane-layered carpet helps reduce overall interior noise levels by approximately 3 decibels.
  • Built on a all-new chassis that is nearly 29% stiffer than before
  • strengthening the body at key connection points along the cowl, upper and lower B-pillars, cross members and at the C-pillars
  • fully 66% of the chassis utilizes either Ultra High Strength Steel (35%) or high strength Steel (31%)
  • A-pillar is 0.8” narrower for improved outward visibility
  • application of structural adhesive around the door openings and along the roof also helps improve torsional rigidity
  • heavily revised front and rear suspension, the front sub-frame utilizes four bushings to reduce ride harshness and impact booms over rough pavement
  • the stabilizer bar has been moved rearward on the McPherson strut front suspension, while the steering box has been moved forward, lending better balance and subsequently improved handling and benefits to on-center feel
  • one-piece steering gear housing is stronger (current two piece), improving steering response and reducing impacts felt through the wheel
  • optional Flex Steer, allow the driver to select 3 distinct steering settings – comfort, normal and Sport
  • shocks on the rear torsion bar suspension have been turned vertically and lengthened allowing for more suspension travel and improving ride comfort
  • 2.0L NU power plant is updated with GDI technology
  • both engines have been tuned to provide more low-end torque (9% more torque at 1500 rpm on the 2.0L and 5% more on the 1.6L)
